Abstract

ISO 20783‑1:2011 specifies a test method to assess the stability of emulsions within the category HFAE, as defined in ISO 6743-4, made up with waters having clearly-defined concentrations of salts. This method is applicable only to HFAE fluids and not to HFAS fluids.

SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011 is the Slovenian adoption of EN ISO 20783-1:2011, published by SIST. It specifies a laboratory test method for determining the emulsion stability of fire-resistant fluids in category HFAE, using defined salt-containing test waters and visual ratings of separation after storage. It is intended for manufacturers, laboratories, and users who need a standard way to compare HFAE fluids and report the result in a common format.

What does SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011 specify?

SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011 specifies a test method for assessing the stability of emulsions within category HFAE, as defined in ISO 6743-4. The method uses waters with clearly defined salt concentrations and is applicable only to HFAE fluids, not to HFAS fluids.

The document is organized into clauses covering the scope, references, terms and definitions, principle, reagents, apparatus, samples and sampling, test conditions, procedure, expression of results, precision, and test report requirements. Annex A is normative and gives the compositions of the test waters.

AnnexWhat it covers
AComposition of the four test waters used for HFAE emulsion stability testing

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011?

Test preparation

SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011 requires 1 l of emulsion to be prepared using one of the standard test waters in Annex A, normally the hardest water with which the manufacturer has declared the emulsifying oil to be compatible. The proportion of emulsifying oil should be the one recommended by the manufacturer for normal applications, unless the parties agree otherwise. In practice, the test should match the product’s declared use conditions as closely as possible.

Test conditions and equipment

SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011 uses three Hirschsohn flasks, cleaned and dried before use, and an oven capable of maintaining either 70 °C or 50 °C. Two test conditions are provided: 70 °C for 1 week, or 50 °C for 3 weeks, chosen by agreement. This gives a controlled way to age the emulsion and compare products under the same thermal exposure.

Visual assessment

SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011 requires the flasks to be inspected while still hot at the end of the test for oil separation, creaming, and any water separation at the bottom. Oil separation is classified into categories 1A, 2A, and 3A, and creaming into 1R, 2R, and 3R. The visual categories turn the observation into a reportable result that can be compared between tests.

How the result is stated

SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011 states that the result for separation and for creaming is the category obtained by at least two identical flask results. If all three flasks give different categories, the test is repeated; if three different categories are again obtained, the result is reported as 3A or 3R. The final stability result is reported as the pair of category designations, one for separation and one for creaming.

Test report and precision

SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011 requires the report to identify the product, the water type used, the emulsifying oil concentration, the test condition, the stability result, whether water separation was seen, any deviations from the method, and the test date. The precision section says the precision of the method has not been determined, but it includes guidance from cooperative interlaboratory tests. For users, that means the written report is the main record for comparing results.

What terms does SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011 define?

  • stability - the ability of a fluid to remain uniform over time without layers forming or components separating.
  • oil separation - a separate oil phase at the surface, seen as droplets or a continuous layer with a distinct colour difference.
  • creaming - a surface layer with white to yellow-white colour and a different consistency, even if the boundary is not distinct.
  • HFAE - the fluid category covered by this part of ISO 20783.
  • HFAS - the fluid category explicitly outside the scope of this part.

Who uses SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011?

SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011 is used by manufacturers and suppliers of fire-resistant fluids, test laboratories, and quality or procurement staff who need a standard way to check declared water compatibility. It is also relevant to users of hydraulic systems who need test results reported as separation and creaming categories before accepting a product. In practice, it supports product development, routine quality control, and specification review.

What changed in SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011 from the previous edition?

SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011 replaces SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2004. The foreword also states that it supersedes EN ISO 20783-1:2003, and ISO describes this second edition as a minor revision of ISO 20783-1:2003.

Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011?

  • ISO 3170:2004 - gives the manual sampling procedure for obtaining emulsifying oil samples.
  • ISO 3696:1987 - specifies the water quality used for demineralized water in the test.
  • ISO 6743-4 - defines category HFAE, which is the fluid category tested here.
  • ISO 20783-2 - the companion part of the same series, covering fluids in category HFB.

What does the SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011 document contain?

SIST EN ISO 20783-1:2011 contains the full laboratory method, from principle and reagents through apparatus, sampling, test conditions, procedure, result expression, precision, and the test report requirements. Clause 9 gives the visual assessment procedure, while Clauses 10 and 12 define how to report the categories and what information the report must include. Annex A provides the compositions of the four test waters used for HFAE testing. The document also includes the rating tables for oil separation and creaming, and a figure of the Hirschsohn flasks used in the test.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
