Overview
EN 50553:2012/A1:2016 - "Railway applications - Requirements for running capability in case of fire on board of rolling stock" is a CLC/CENELEC amendment that updates the original EN 50553:2012. It defines safety requirements and design measures that preserve the running capability of rail vehicles during an onboard fire incident. The amendment (A1, published March 2016) clarifies component-level requirements and test conditions to support safe operation, type testing and national implementation across CENELEC members.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Running capability in case of fire: Requirements aimed at ensuring a train can continue safe operation, or be brought to a safe state, during or after fire events on board rolling stock.
- Transformer and inductance protection (Clause 6.2.2.1):
- Overpressure protection must prevent tank rupture from catastrophic internal failures. The document replaces the term “over-pressure valve” with a more general “protection device”, while retaining type-test and siting requirements to keep outlets away from ignition sources.
- Activation of the protection device must open the main circuit breaker; pressures must be set so that for non-catastrophic internal faults no insulating fluid is released.
- If an overpressure valve is used, it shall comply with EN 50216-5:2002/A2:2005, Clause 6. A note indicates typical activation pressure of the overpressure switch is about 0.2 bar lower than the valve operating pressure.
- Insulation liquid temperature and flow monitoring:
- A means to monitor temperature and ensure flow of transformer/inductance insulation liquid is mandatory.
- If flow is sufficient for accurate temperature measurement, a temperature control strategy must manage power (including tractive effort) so the insulation liquid limit temperatures are not exceeded; isolation from high-power sources is required if limits are reached.
- If flow is insufficient to measure temperature reliably, power must be shut down by isolating the transformer from the high-power source.
- The referenced limit temperatures are described in EN 60310:2004 (clause 8.2).
Applications and users
This standard is directly relevant to:
- Rolling stock designers and electrical system engineers
- Component manufacturers (transformers, overpressure devices, monitoring systems)
- Railway operators, safety engineers and maintenance teams
- Certification and conformity assessment bodies assessing compliance with EU directives
Practical uses include specification writing, type testing, risk assessments, procurement requirements, and integration of fire-resilient electrical designs into passenger and freight vehicles.
