Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Scrap - Part 15: Decoated aluminium scrap from post-consumer aluminium packagings
This European Standard specifies characteristics, chemical composition and metal yield of decoated aluminium scrap obtained by decoating mixed used aluminium packagings through various processes, e.g. pyrolysis, mechanical delamination, chemical delamination or a combination of these. It also applies to aluminium scrap separated from the bottom ashes of incinerators.
EXAMPLE A mix of used aluminium packaging scrap of different alloys which were decoated to be used for melting or other forms of metal recycling.

Overview
EN 13920-15:2003 is the CEN European Standard that specifies the characteristics, chemical composition and metal yield for decoated aluminium scrap from post-consumer aluminium packagings. The standard applies to material produced by decoating processes such as pyrolysis, mechanical delamination, chemical delamination or combinations of these, and it also covers aluminium recovered from incinerator bottom ashes.
This part of EN 13920 is intended to ensure consistent feedstock quality for melting and other metal recycling operations.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability: Decoated scrap from mixed used aluminium packaging; includes material separated from bottom ashes of incinerators.
- Decoating processes referenced: Pyrolysis, mechanical delamination, chemical delamination or combinations.
- Ordering information: Orders should reference EN 13920-15, scrap category, gross mass, delivery period, and any deviating characteristics (e.g. piece size or foreign material). Origin and piece size/surface condition are recommended when meaningful.
- Quality requirements:
- The scrap shall not contain free iron.
- The scrap shall not be heavily oxidized as a result of the decoating process.
- The scrap shall not contain fines < 1 mm and must be free from non-metallic foreign materials.
- If material does not meet requirements, the supplier must notify the purchaser and obtain agreement before shipment.
- Chemical composition (after magnetic removal of free iron and appropriate melting):
- Si: max 1.0 %
- Fe: max 1.0 %
- Cu: max 2.5 %
- Mn: max 0.4 %
- Mg: max 2.0 %
- Zn: max 0.8 %
- Pb + Sn: max 0.2 %
- Others (each): max 0.1 %
- Aluminium content: remainder (calculated from 100 % minus sum of other elements, rounded as specified in the standard).
- Metal yield: The metal yield, determined per EN 13920-1 and related to as-delivered mass, shall be ≥ 80 %.
Applications
- Provides a standardized specification for recyclers, smelters and material traders handling decoated aluminium packaging scrap.
- Ensures predictable feedstock quality for melting and secondary aluminium production, improving process planning and metal recovery.
- Supports procurement and quality control by defining ordering information, acceptance criteria and notification procedures for non-conforming consignments.
Related Standards
- EN 13920-1:2003 - General requirements, sampling and tests (classification procedure, sampling, treatment of non-conformities and arbitration are handled in accordance with this part).
- prEN 12258-3:2000 - Terms and definitions for aluminium scrap (used for terminology in this standard).
Practical value: EN 13920-15:2003 gives buyers and suppliers a clear framework to trade decoated post-consumer aluminium packaging scrap with defined chemical limits and a required minimum metal yield, supporting efficient, consistent recycling operations.
