Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Scrap - Part 10: Scrap consisting of used aluminium beverage cans

This part of this European Standard specifies characteristics, form, chemical composition and metal yield of scrap consisting of used aluminium beverage cans. NOTE 1 This scrap is commercially known as UBC (Used Beverage Cans) NOTE 2 Complete cans, after removal of the liquid content, even if not obtained from post-consumer collection schemes, are within the scope of this standard and are also regarded as UBC.

Overview

EN 13920-10:2003 - "Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Scrap - Part 10: Scrap consisting of used aluminium beverage cans" (UBC) is a CEN standard that defines physical, chemical and commercial requirements for scrap made up of used aluminium beverage cans. It applies to complete cans (with liquid removed) regardless of collection source and is intended to standardize acceptance, testing and trading of UBC for recycling and remelting.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and definition
    • Covers Used Beverage Cans (UBC), including complete cans after liquid removal.
  • Physical characteristics
    • Moisture: ≤ 2% (mass fraction).
    • Total volatile substances: ≤ 5% (mass fraction).
    • Scrap must be free from foreign materials such as free iron, lead, aluminium foil, burnt or oxidized cans.
  • Form of supply
    • Bales: maximum dimensions 800 × 1 000 × 1 200 mm; specific mass 200–350 kg/m3.
    • Briquettes: maximum dimensions 400 × 400 × 600 mm; specific mass 350–700 kg/m3.
  • Chemical composition (after decoating and melting)
    • Limits (mass fraction, max) include typical values such as: Si ≤ 0.30%, Fe ≤ 0.50%, Cu ≤ 0.20%, Mn ≤ 1.10%, Mg ≤ 3.00%, plus low limits for Ni, Zn, Ti, Pb, Sn and other elements. Aluminium content is the balance (remainder).
  • Metal yield
    • Required metal yield (per EN 13920‑1 test method): ≥ 88%.
  • Ordering and contractual information
    • Orders should reference EN 13920-10, scrap category, gross mass, delivery period, origin, and any deviations (size, surface condition, foreign material).
  • Classification, non‑conformities, arbitration
    • Procedures for sampling, testing and dispute resolution reference EN 13920‑1.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Aluminium recyclers and primary smelters - ensure feedstock quality and predictable melt chemistry.
  • Scrap traders and brokers - create clear commercial specifications for UBC consignments.
  • Waste management companies and material recovery facilities - prepare, bale and supply UBC to market specifications.
  • Procurement, quality managers and laboratory personnel - acceptance testing, sampling and compliance checks.
  • Regulators and auditors - harmonized criteria for recycled aluminium inputs.
