Unbound and hydraulically bound mixtures - Part 3: Test methods for laboratory reference density and water content - Vibrocompression with controlled parameters

This European Standard specifies a method for the determination of the maximum reference dry bulk density and the difficulty of compaction of a hydraulically bound or unbound mixture using a compacting machine called "controlled parameters vibro compression" (CPVC). This European Standard applies to unbound mixtures as well as to mixtures bound with hydraulically binders before setting. This method is applicable to mixture with a maximum size aggregate D equal to 31,5 mm.

Overview - EN 13286-3:2003 (Vibrocompression with controlled parameters)

EN 13286-3:2003 is a CEN European Standard that defines a laboratory test method (controlled parameters vibrocompression, CPVC) to determine the maximum reference dry bulk density and water content of unbound and hydraulically bound mixtures, and to quantify the difficulty of compaction (DC(w)). The method applies to mixtures with a maximum aggregate size D = 31.5 mm and is part of the EN 13286 series for road construction materials.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Applies to unbound mixtures and hydraulically bound mixtures before setting.
    • Maximum aggregate size: 31.5 mm.
  • Apparatus and test parameters
    • Cylindrical steel mould: internal diameter 152.0 ± 0.2 mm, specimen height after compaction ~152 mm.
    • Vibrators providing horizontal circular vibration: (0.80 ± 0.08) mm amplitude at 50 Hz and 100 Hz.
    • Piston of specified diameter and a variable axial pressure P(t) that increases during compaction according to the standard formula: P(t) = 0.441 · t / (22.5 − 6.5 · t) (P in MPa, t in minutes).
    • Test portion mass range: approximately 6.0–6.5 kg (adjusted so compacted height meets requirement).
  • Procedure
    • Prepare at least three water contents near expected site moisture; difference between successive contents < 1.5%.
    • For each water content prepare four test portions: two compacted at 100 Hz and two at 50 Hz.
    • Compact each specimen for 3 minutes, measure compacted height, and calculate dry density.
  • Calculations and outputs
    • Laboratory dry density rd(w) calculated from specimen mass, water content and height.
    • Reference dry density rdR = maximum rd100(w) from 100 Hz tests.
    • Difficulty of compaction DC(w) = 100 · (rdR − rd50(w)) / rdR and plotted against water content.
    • Classification into compaction difficulty classes DC1 / DC2 / DC3 (informative annex).

Practical applications and users

  • Useful for pavement designers, road material laboratories, contractors and quality control engineers to:
    • Determine optimal compaction moisture and expected in-situ dry density.
    • Assess how readily materials compact under vibratory equipment (roller selection and process control).
    • Compare materials and mix designs for constructability before on-site work.
  • Applicable in specification verification, acceptance testing and laboratory mix characterization for road and pavement construction projects.

Related standards

  • EN 13286 series (laboratory reference density and water content methods), notably:
    • EN 13286-1 - Introduction, general requirements and sampling
    • EN 13286-2 - Proctor compaction
    • Other parts in the series cover vibrating hammer, vibrating table and specimen manufacturing (see EN 13286 family)
