Overview

EN 12541:2002 is a CEN European Standard for sanitary tapware titled Sanitary tapware - Pressure flushing valves and automatic closing urinal valves PN 10. It sets requirements and test methods for flushing valves with hydraulic automatic closure used on WC pans and urinals. The standard covers marking, materials, dimensional and hydraulic properties, pressure resistance, leaktightness, mechanical endurance and acoustic performance. It also defines requirements and verification procedures for the atmospheric interrupter that must form an integral part of WC flushing valves.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope & exclusions

    • Applies to WC flushing valves (for WC pans EN 997), single‑flush urinals and siphon‑action urinals (prEN 13407).
    • Excludes no‑contact (sensor) detection valves.
    • Operative conditions include specific dynamic pressure ranges by nominal size, maximum static pressure of 1 MPa and water temperature ≤ 25 °C.
  • Classification

    • WC valves by volume class (e.g., Class 6 for 6 L or adjustable 6–9 L; Class 9 for 9 L).
    • Urinal valves by volume classes (1.5 L, 4 L, 6 L).
  • Marking & designation

    • Valves must be indelibly marked with manufacturer identification and acoustic group.
    • Designation includes intended appliance, volume class, control type, mounting, nominal DN and connecting dimensions.
  • Materials & hygiene

    • All water‑contact materials must be safe for potable water up to 25 °C and must not alter taste, smell or appearance.
    • Exposed chrome plating must comply with EN 248.
  • Dimensional & mechanical requirements

    • Thread, outlet and connection dimensions specified for top‑entry and side‑entry valves.
    • Mechanical endurance and operating force tests required.
  • Hydraulic tests & safety

    • Detailed hydraulic and flow test methods (flow‑rate, time, volume, impact force) and measurement of water hammer (pressure surge) are specified.
    • Leaktightness, pressure resistance and verification of atmospheric pipe interrupter performance (including splash prevention and vacuum operation) are included.
  • Acoustic testing

    • Noise emission test procedures reference EN ISO 3822 parts 1 and 4.

Applications - who uses EN 12541

  • Manufacturers designing and certifying pressure flushing valves and automatic urinal valves (PN 10).
  • Test laboratories performing type tests for leaktightness, hydraulic performance and endurance.
  • Plumbing specifiers, building services engineers and procurement teams writing product specifications for commercial and public sanitary installations.
  • Regulators and conformity assessors ensuring compliance with European normative requirements.
