Overview
SIST EN 62841-2-11:2016/A1:2020 establishes the updated safety requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held reciprocating saws, including both portable and transportable tools, as well as certain machinery for lawn and garden use. This standard is aligned with IEC 62841-2-11:2015/A1:2018 and serves as a harmonized approach to ensure operator safety in compliance with the European Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC). The document addresses particular protective measures for both professional and consumer hand-held reciprocating saws, such as jigsaws and sabre saws, commonly used in construction, woodworking, and gardening applications.
Key Topics
Safety Requirements:
- Focuses on electric hazards, including the risk of electric shock from accidental contact with live wiring during operation.
- Specifies the need for insulated gripping surfaces and appropriate user warnings to mitigate the risk of electrical injury.
- Mandates secure workpiece support to prevent tool slippage and loss of control, reducing mechanical and user hazards.
Mechanical Protection:
- Requires the integration of physical barriers between grip zones and saw blades to prevent accidental contact with the teeth, especially when grip zones are adjacent to the cutting area.
- Details the minimum dimensions and positions for these barriers to enhance user protection without impacting usability.
- Recognizes that some tools may use auxiliary handles instead of barriers to achieve equivalent safety performance.
Construction and Durability:
- Stresses tool resistance against inadvertent access to live parts, the likelihood of sawing into hidden wiring or cords, and mechanical strength requirements.
- Applies to both corded and battery-powered reciprocating saws, emphasizing battery pack safety for cordless models.
Applications
Industrial and Professional Use:
- Widely applicable for hand-held power saws used on construction sites, in workshops, and by maintenance teams.
- Provides manufacturers and quality managers with a benchmark for product design, certification, and CE marking under relevant EU directives.
Consumer and Gardening Tools:
- Ensures safety in consumer-grade reciprocating saws used in landscaping tasks, DIY, and home maintenance.
- Specifies requirements for saws designed for cutting wood, plastics, and metals, contributing to safe handling and minimizing injury risks.
Certification and Compliance:
- Supports presumption of conformity with the EU Machinery Directive when the requirements are met, facilitating market access within the European Economic Area.
- Guides testing organizations and market surveillance authorities in verifying product safety.

SIST EN 62841-2-11:2016/A1:2020 is vital for manufacturers, designers, and regulators, ensuring that electric motor-operated reciprocating saws are safe and reliable, aligned with the highest safety standards, and suitable for the European market. By complying with these requirements, stakeholders minimize the risks associated with electric and mechanical hazards in both professional and domestic tool applications.
