Overview
SIST EN 15477:2009 is a European Standard established by CEN for the determination of water-soluble potassium content in fertilizers. This method applies specifically to potassium fertilizers listed in Annex I of Regulation (EC) No 2003/2003. It provides a standardized and precise procedure to measure the potassium available in fertilizer products, ensuring quality control, regulatory compliance, and consistency across the fertilizer industry in Europe.
Developed by Technical Committee CEN/TC 260, this standard supersedes the earlier CEN/TS 15477:2006 and aligns with international practices. It supports environmental safety and effective nutrient management by allowing accurate assessment of potassium content, which is vital for agricultural productivity.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
Applies to all potassium fertilizers under EU Regulation (EC) No 2003/2003.
Targets fertilizers containing water-soluble potassium for agricultural use.Analytical Principle
Potassium is dissolved in water from the sample. Interfering substances are fixed or removed. Potassium precipitates as potassium tetraphenylborate in an alkaline medium, allowing gravimetric measurement.Reagents and Apparatus
Utilizes recognized analytical-grade chemicals such as formaldehyde, sodium hydroxide, EDTA, and sodium tetraphenylborate solution.
Requires laboratory equipment including beakers, filter crucibles, ovens, desiccators, and pipettes.Procedure
- Sample preparation by boiling and filtering to obtain a clear solution.
- Addition of reagents to precipitate potassium tetraphenylborate.
- Vacuum filtration and washing of the precipitate.
- Drying and weighing to determine potassium content.
- Blank and control tests ensure accuracy.
Calculations
Uses established conversion factors to express results as mass fractions of K2O or elemental potassium in the fertilizer.
Accounts for dilution factors and blank corrections.Precision
Inter-laboratory studies confirm method repeatability and reproducibility, with repeatability limits and reproducibility limits detailed for typical fertilizer samples.Reporting
Test reports must document sample details, method reference, results, sampling dates, precision compliance, and any deviations or unusual occurrences during analysis.
Applications
Quality Control in Fertilizer Production
Manufacturers use this method to verify the potassium content of their products before distribution.Regulatory Compliance
Ensures potassium fertilizer products meet EU standards and labeling requirements, fostering transparency and safety.Agricultural Research and Soil Management
Helps agronomists and soil scientists assess fertilizer efficacy and nutrient availability.Material Certification and Trade
Supports consistent quality benchmarks for fertilizing materials in international trade.Environmental Monitoring
Accurate potassium measurement minimizes over-fertilization risks, reducing potential environmental harm.
