Methods of test for screed materials - Part 5: Determination of wear resistance to rolling wheel of screed material for wearing layer

This European Standard specifies a method for determining the wear resistance to a heavily loaded rolling wheel on moulded mortar specimens made from cementitious screed- and synthetic resin screed material or optionally for other screed materials for wearing surface.

Overview

EN 13892-5:2003 - Methods of test for screed materials, Part 5 - specifies a laboratory method to determine the wear resistance to a heavily loaded rolling wheel of screed materials intended as wearing layers. The standard applies to moulded specimens of cementitious screed and synthetic resin screed (and optionally other screed materials), assessing abrasion caused by repeated passages of a loaded swivel castor (rolling wheel).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test principle: Repeated passages of a heavily loaded swivel castor produce combined normal and shear stresses; wear is quantified from change in surface profile.
  • Specimens: Three moulded slabs (minimum 500 mm edge, thickness ≥ 50 mm) prepared and cured in accordance with EN 13892-1. Surface must be dry and free of contaminants.
  • Test rig and movement:
    • Longitudinal travel: (390 ± 2) mm at (7.0 ± 0.4) cycles/min.
    • Transverse travel: (260 ± 2) mm at (1.72 ± 0.1) cycles/min.
    • Frequency ratio ≈ 4.07 to avoid repeat wheel paths.
  • Swivel castor (rolling wheel):
    • Solid case-hardened steel wheel (Vickers hardness ≈ 735 HV over outer 1.5 mm).
    • Diameter (125 ± 2) mm, width (40 ± 1) mm, overhang (45 ± 1) mm.
    • Total applied load: (2000 ± 10) N.
  • Abrasive debris removal: Suction nozzles / vacuum to continuously remove abraded material.
  • Measurement:
    • Depth gauge readable to 10 µm; profile measured via a rigid bridge with defined positions.
    • Test duration: 10 000 cycles in the long direction (≈ 24 h); stop earlier if severe damage or substrate exposure occurs.
    • Calculation: abrasion volume RWA is derived from mean depth d (µm). Using the standard’s assumption of an abraded area of 1 100 cm²:
      • RWA (cm³) = d (µm) × 11.0
  • Test report: Comprehensive documentation including specimen identification, preparation conditions, apparatus details, individual and mean results, and remarks (per clause 8).

Applications and users

EN 13892-5:2003 is used for:

  • Product development and comparative screed testing (cementitious and resin screeds).
  • Quality control and factory/laboratory acceptance testing.
  • Specification and compliance checks for floor wearing layers in commercial, industrial and public buildings.
  • Decision-making by flooring manufacturers, independent test laboratories, architects, specifiers and contractors concerned with abrasion resistance, durability and expected service life.

Related standards

  • EN 13892-1 (sampling, making and curing specimens)
  • EN 13813 (screed material properties and requirements)
  • EN 1818 (resilient floor coverings / related test rig)
  • EN 10084, ISO 606 (referenced for materials and transmission details)
