Overview

SIST EN ISO 11668:2002 specifies general test methods for chlorinated polymerization resins used as binders in paints and varnishes. This European Standard, identical with the international ISO 11668:1997, is managed by CEN Technical Committee 139 and provides standardized testing procedures for:

  • Chlorinated rubber resins
  • Vinyl chloride copolymers

These materials are essential components in coatings, offering specific chemical and physical properties crucial for paint and varnish performance. The standard ensures consistent evaluation of these binders across industries and labs, aiding quality control and product development.

Key Topics

1. Scope of Testing
EN ISO 11668 outlines test methods for two main chlorinated resins used as paint binders:

  • Chlorinated rubber with chlorine content of 64% to 68%
  • Vinyl chloride copolymers predominantly composed of polyvinyl chloride

2. Testing Parameters
The standard defines procedures for determining essential characteristics:

  • Colour Number

    • Assessed by dissolving samples and measured using the Gardner colour scale (ISO 4630).
    • For very light samples (Gardner < 1), the Platinum-cobalt scale (ISO 6271) is used.
  • Viscosity

    • Measured on resin solutions following ISO 3219 using rotational viscometers.
    • Factors influencing viscosity include solution temperature, stirring rate, and dissolution time.
    • Alternative method using falling-ball viscometer (ISO 12058-1) may be agreed upon.
  • Density

    • Determined by gas comparison pyknometer per ISO 8130-2.
  • Chlorine Content

    • High chlorine content (>50% m/m) tested according to ISO 1158.
    • Lower chlorine content measured via the Wickbold combustion method detailed in Annex A of the standard.

3. Sampling and Reporting

  • Representative sampling follows ISO 842.
  • Test reports must document product identification, test methods, solvents used, solution concentrations, measurement conditions, test results, and any deviations.

Applications

This standard is pivotal for industries involved in manufacturing and quality control of paints and varnishes containing chlorinated binders. Its practical applications include:

  • Quality Assurance
Ensuring consistent resin performance through standardized viscosity, colour, density, and chlorine content assessments.

  • Product Development
Facilitating comparative analysis of raw materials and binders to optimize paint formulations for durability, appearance, and chemical resistance.

  • Regulatory Compliance
Providing a uniform testing framework that supports conformity to European and international requirements within coatings industries.

  • Supplier and Material Evaluation
Enabling purchasers and manufacturers to specify and verify chlorinated polymer resin quality reliably.

Related Standards

EN ISO 11668 references several important standards supporting its test methods:

  • ISO 842:1984 – Sampling methods for raw materials in paints and varnishes.
  • ISO 1158:1998 – Determination of chlorine content in vinyl chloride polymers.
  • ISO 3219:1993 – Viscosity measurement of polymers in liquid states using rotational viscometers.
  • ISO 4630:1997 – Gardner colour scale for colorimetry of clear liquids.
  • ISO 6271:1997 – Platinum-cobalt colour scale for clear liquids.
  • ISO 8130-2:1992 – Density measurement by gas comparison pyknometer.
  • ISO 12058-1:1997 – Viscosity measurement using falling-ball viscometers.

Implementing EN ISO 11668 alongside these standards ensures comprehensive characterization and traceability of chlorinated polymer binders in coatings.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 11668 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, subcommittee SC 10, Test methods for
binders for paints and varnishes.
