Overview

SIST EN ISO 11909:2026 is an international standard developed by CEN and ISO, specifying general methods of test for polyisocyanate resins used as binders in paints, varnishes, and related coating products. This standard provides robust procedures to evaluate key properties of polyisocyanate resins - essential components in industrial coatings - ensuring product quality, consistency, and regulatory compliance.

As polyisocyanate resins are integral to producing durable and high-performance paints and varnishes, SIST EN ISO 11909:2026 supports manufacturers, laboratories, and quality controllers in performing standardized and reliable testing. The standard replaces the previous edition ISO 11909:2006 and reflects updated technical improvements such as potentiometric titration for better accuracy.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Defines test methods for polyisocyanate resins and their solutions destined for use as binders in paints and varnishes.
  • Tested Properties:
    • Colour (ISO 6271, ISO 4630)
    • Viscosity (ISO 3219-2, ISO 3219-3)
    • Non-volatile matter content (ISO 3251)
    • Flashpoint (ISO 1523, ISO 3679)
    • Density (various ISO 2811 methods)
    • Isocyanate content (normative Annex A)
    • Monomeric diisocyanate content (ISO 10283)
  • Isocyanate Content Determination:
    • Reaction with dibutylamine followed by titration with hydrochloric acid.
    • Techniques include visual endpoint detection using bromophenol blue or potentiometric titration for coloured resins.
  • Sampling: Adheres to ISO 15528 guidelines for obtaining representative product samples.
  • Precision and Reporting: Provides repeatability and reproducibility data for tests to ensure reliability; mandates thorough documentation of testing conditions and results.

Applications

SIST EN ISO 11909:2026 is critical for:

  • Industrial Paint & Varnish Manufacturing: Ensuring raw binder materials meet stringent quality standards before formulation.
  • Quality Control Laboratories: Performing routine and acceptance testing of polyisocyanate resins.
  • Research & Development: Characterizing resin properties to develop improved coatings with enhanced durability, chemical resistance, and aesthetic qualities.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Supporting conformity assessment under relevant international and national regulations governing paints and varnishes.
  • Supplier Qualification and Verification: Standardized testing facilitates supplier certification and incoming material inspection.

This standard benefits all stakeholders in the coatings supply chain by promoting consistent material performance, reducing variability, and enhancing product safety.

Related Standards

  • ISO 648: Laboratory glassware specifications used in testing.
  • ISO 6353, ISO 2811 series: Density determination methods.
  • ISO 3219 parts 2 and 3: Rheological testing procedures.
  • ISO 3251: Methods to measure non-volatile matter content.
  • ISO 3679, ISO 1523: Flashpoint measurement standards.
  • ISO 10283: Determination of monomeric diisocyanates in resins.
  • ISO 15528: Sampling procedures for paints and varnishes.
  • ISO 4618:2023: Vocabulary for paints and varnishes terminology.

Integrating these standards ensures comprehensive test coverage and harmonized terminology in quality control processes for polyisocyanate-based binders.
