Overview
EN 14501:2021/prA1 - developed by CEN/TC 33 - specifies performance characteristics and classification for the full range of shutters, awnings and blinds (solar protection devices as defined in EN 12216). The standard defines thermal and visual comfort metrics, classification methods and reference glazing data (Annex A replacement in prA1). It is intended for product comparison, specification and performance communication of internal and external solar protection.
Key topics and requirements
Thermal comfort parameters
- Solar factor (total solar energy transmittance, gtot) - how much solar energy passes into a space.
- Secondary heat transfer factor - contribution from reradiation and conduction.
- Direct solar transmittance - portion of direct solar radiation transmitted.
- Note: some parameters (e.g. gtot) are not applicable for devices that are not parallel to the glazing (for example folding‑arm awnings).
Visual comfort parameters
- Darkening performance - ability to reduce daylight levels.
- Night privacy - opacity/visibility to outside at night.
- Visual contact with the outside - degree of view retention.
- Glare control - capacity to limit direct glare.
- Daylight utilization - how effectively daylight is admitted and distributed.
- Rendering of colours - impact on perceived colour fidelity.
Reference glazing and spectral data
- prA1 replaces Annex A with defined reference glazings (A–H) and pane spectral/integrated data to ensure consistent product comparisons where glazing is unknown.
- Uses spectral methods and integrated data in line with EN 410 and EN 673; ISO 19467 guidance applies for wavelength interpolation.
Limitations
- Not applicable to solar protection devices made from fluorescent materials.
- Some detailed analyses may use different parameters or more advanced methods where required.
Applications and practical value
- Product design and R&D: optimize thermal performance, glare control and daylighting.
- Performance labelling and classification: harmonised method to compare blinds and shutters.
- Building design and energy modelling: informed selection for HVAC sizing, daylight strategies and occupant comfort.
- Procurement, tenders and certification: objective performance data for specifications and compliance checks.
- Retrofits and façade consultancy: select optimal solar protection for energy savings and visual comfort.
Who uses this standard
- Manufacturers and product designers of blinds, shutters and awnings
- Façade engineers, architects and daylighting consultants
- Test laboratories and certification bodies
- Building energy modellers, sustainability and compliance professionals
- Specifiers and procurement teams for public and commercial buildings

A.3 Reference glazing with spectral data
A.3.1 General
This clause specifies reference glazing for which both integrated data and spectral data of panes are
available.
Spectral data of panes are presented in A.3.5.
NOTE The wavelength intervals for which the spectral data are given impact the results of a calculation. In the
case different wavelength intervals are used for the panes and the solar protection material, ISO 19467 provides a
method to calculate the interpolation of wavelengths.
Integrated data are specified in A.3.2 to A.3.4. They were calculated on the basis of the spectral data
specified in A.3.5 using EN 410:2011 for the solar and visual properties and EN 673:2011 for the thermal
property (U-value).
A.3.2 Glazing F
Double glazing (4 mm + 16 mm space + 4 mm), with low emissivity coating in position 3 (outer surface
of the inner pane), space filled with 90% argon:
pane 1 / 16 mm space with argon / pane 2 (flipped)
