This European Standard specifies the requirements for the characteristics and testing methods for organic coatings made of organic coating material suitable for the application on to steel wire and wire products of circular or other sections.
Other organic materials which are applied intentionally or otherwise such as oils, greases, waxes and temporary finishes which do not become integral or a permanent part of the finished wire product are excluded from this standard
This European Standard is divided in a number of parts, with Part 1 covering the requirements of a general nature and applies to organic coatings and coating material for which no specific requirements have been established in the subsequent parts of prEN 10245.

Overview
EN 10245-1:2011 - "Steel wire and wire products - Organic coatings on steel wire - Part 1: General rules" is a CEN European Standard that defines the general requirements and testing methods for organic coatings and coating materials intended for application to steel wire and related wire products (including wire ropes and link chains). Part 1 covers coatings and coating materials for which no part‑specific rules exist in subsequent parts of the series. It excludes temporary finishes (oils, greases, waxes) that do not become an integral part of the finished wire product.
The document is structured to address:
- characteristics and tests of coating materials as supplied (Clause 4),
- properties and tests of the coating after application to wire (Clause 5),
- performance requirements and exposure testing of the finished coated wire (Clause 6).
Key topics and technical requirements
EN 10245-1:2011 specifies requirements and test methods for both coating materials and finished organic coatings, including:
- Composition and colour of coating materials and applied coatings
- Physical properties: apparent density, Shore hardness, tensile strength and elongation, melt flow / extrusion index, shelf life
- Appearance and finish: gloss, colour matching, surface appearance
- Coating dimensions and quality: thickness measurement and adherence (adhesion) testing
- Mechanical and electrical checks: impact (mechanical shock) resistance and spark testing
- Performance testing: accelerated weathering (artificial light), salt spray (corrosion), humidity exposure, sulphur dioxide in humid atmosphere and long‑term natural weathering
The standard references applicable test methods and normative documents (e.g., EN/ISO methods for density, gloss, colour measurement, Shore hardness, salt spray and weathering tests).
Applications and users
EN 10245-1 is intended for:
- Wire manufacturers and coating applicators specifying and validating organic coatings on steel wire
- Quality assurance and test laboratories performing acceptance and performance tests
- Product engineers, procurement specialists and specifiers creating technical specifications for coated wire products
- Standards and compliance teams ensuring harmonized testing and reporting across the EU market
Typical practical uses include selection and verification of coating material for durability, adhesion and aesthetic performance, and defining acceptance criteria during manufacture and inspection.

This Part 1 is the general rules element of a series. Related parts include:
- EN 10245-2: PVC finished wire
- EN 10245-3: PE coated wire
- EN 10245-4: Polyester coated wire
