SIST EN 772-14:2002 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 772-14:2001, published by SIST and prepared within CEN/TC 125 "Masonry". It specifies a laboratory method for measuring moisture movement in aggregate concrete and manufactured stone masonry units, so manufacturers, laboratories, and specifiers can assess expansion and shrinkage under the same test conditions.
What does SIST EN 772-14:2002 specify?
SIST EN 772-14:2002 specifies how to measure moisture movement between two defined extreme moisture conditions for aggregate concrete and manufactured stone masonry units. The method is intended for comparison of units tested on the same basis, using defined sampling, conditioning, soaking, drying, and reporting steps.
The document is organized into a foreword, scope, normative references, principle, symbols, apparatus, specimen preparation, procedure, expression of results, evaluation of results, and test report. Clause 10 then sets out the information that has to be recorded so the test can be traced and repeated.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 772-14:2002?
SIST EN 772-14:2002 measures two movements on separate sets of specimens: moisture expansion after soaking and drying shrinkage after oven drying. In practice, this gives a controlled way to compare how masonry units change size when exposed to water and heat.
Specimens and conditioning
Clause 6 requires whole masonry units or pieces cut from whole units, sealed in airtight bags immediately after sampling. The document also requires the dates of manufacture and sampling to be declared, a minimum age of 28 days at test start unless otherwise specified, and at least six specimens unless the product specification requires more.
The specimens are first kept in airtight bags, then conditioned in the laboratory for 14 more days before testing. They are weighed, numbered from lightest to heaviest, and the test begins after this conditioning period. This matters because the starting moisture state affects the measured movement.
Measurement setup
Clause 6 also requires two gauge location pads on each specimen, fixed with suitable adhesive at the correct gauge length and in the correct position for the unit type. Table 1 links specimen length to the required gauge length, and Figure 1 shows where the pads are placed.
Clause 5 sets the equipment requirements, including a length-measuring device with very high accuracy, a ventilated oven, a water tank, a weighing instrument, and Invar calibration rods. In practice, these conditions keep the measurements stable enough to detect small changes in length and mass.
Test procedure
Clause 7 requires testing in a laboratory at controlled temperature and humidity. After an initial measurement, specimens 2, 4 and 6 are soaked in water for 96 hours, then measured for moisture expansion, while specimens 1, 3 and 5 are dried for 21 days in a ventilated oven, stabilized, and then measured for drying shrinkage.
This split-sample procedure is important because the same sample set provides both movement values without mixing the two effects. The drying specimens are also weighed after the test so moisture content can be calculated.
Results and reporting
Clause 8 gives the calculations for individual moisture expansion, individual drying shrinkage, and moisture content. Clause 9 then requires mean expansion and shrinkage values, plus a total movement coefficient for the sample, to be reported.
Clause 10 lists the report items, including the standard reference, product description, sampling method, production and sampling dates, storage conditions, specimen weights, individual and mean coefficients, moisture content values, and any remarks. That report structure is what lets a buyer, lab, or quality manager compare results from different batches or suppliers.
What terms does SIST EN 772-14:2002 define?
SIST EN 772-14:2002 uses a small set of technical terms and symbols to describe movement and test conditions.
- Moisture expansion coefficient - the length increase measured after soaking, expressed as movement per metre.
- Drying shrinkage coefficient - the length decrease measured after oven drying, expressed as movement per metre.
- Total movement coefficient - the combined movement value derived from the mean expansion and shrinkage results.
- Moisture content - the mass loss on drying expressed as a percentage of dry mass.
- Gauge location pads - the fixed reference points used for repeated length measurements.
- Invar calibration rods - stable reference rods used to calibrate the length-measuring device.
- Relative humidity - the humidity control used during conditioning and laboratory testing.
Who uses SIST EN 772-14:2002?
SIST EN 772-14:2002 is used by test laboratories, masonry unit manufacturers, quality control teams, and specifiers who need a standardized moisture movement test. It is also relevant to buyers and procurement staff who compare product data for aggregate concrete and manufactured stone masonry units. In practice, it supports product qualification, routine verification, and technical documentation.
What changed in SIST EN 772-14:2002 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 772-14:2002 is identical to EN 772-14:2001.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 772-14:2002?
SIST EN 772-14:2002 cites two companion specification standards in its normative references:
- prEN 771-3 - specification for aggregate concrete masonry units, which identifies the unit type covered by this test.
- prEN 771-5 - specification for manufactured stone masonry units, which identifies the other unit type covered by this test.
These references help link the test method to the relevant product specifications.
What does the SIST EN 772-14:2002 document contain?
SIST EN 772-14:2002 contains the full laboratory method, including the principle of the test, apparatus requirements, specimen preparation, and the step-by-step procedure for soaking and drying. It also provides the calculation methods for expansion, shrinkage, total movement, and moisture content, plus the required reporting items.
The document includes Table 1 for gauge length selection, Figure 1 for pad placement, and Figure 2 for positioning specimens in the water tank. Clause 10 gives the report content that is needed for traceability and comparison of results.
