Textiles - Methods of testing the fibre proof properties of fabrics: Rubbing test
This European Standard describes a method for the determination of the fibre-proof properties of a fabric using a rubbing apparatus, when the fabric is tested against the filling material (either loose fibre or wadding) that will be used in the final product. This European Standard is applicable to all types of bedding articles, clothing and quilted products filled with textile materials.

Overview
EN 15586:2008 - Textiles: Methods of testing the fibre proof properties of fabrics - Rubbing test (CEN) defines a laboratory method to evaluate how well a fabric resists penetration and protrusion of loose filling fibres (loose fibre or wadding). The standard is applicable to bedding articles, clothing and quilted products filled with textile materials and specifies specimen preparation, apparatus, test conditions and reporting requirements for the rubbing test.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: A filled fabric cushion is rubbed in a specified rubbing apparatus and the number of filling fibres protruding through (or passing out of) the fabric is counted.
- Specimen preparation:
- Specimen sizes and orientation specified (e.g., ~140 × 420 mm for loose-fibre tests; 180 × 240 mm for wadding tests).
- Cushions sewn using lockstitch (ISO 4915 stitch type 301) with (10 ± 1) stitches/cm and 1 mm seam stitch length.
- Cushion fill adjusted to target thickness (measured with EN ISO 5084 thickness tester using a 50 cm2 presser foot at 2 ± 0.02 kPa); typical target height range is noted to ensure consistent filling.
- Apparatus and aids:
- Rubbing apparatus as used for down-proof testing (see EN 12132-1).
- Thickness tester (EN ISO 5084), UV light source and magnification device (e.g., 8×) for fibre counting.
- Test procedure:
- Conditioning and testing in standard atmosphere per EN ISO 139.
- Standard test run: apparatus set for 2 700 revolutions; after test, count protruding visible fibres longer than 2 mm on both sides (exclude flap areas).
- If protruding fibres form pills, count all included fibres. Counting stops at “more than 50”.
- Reporting: Include reference to EN 15586, material descriptions, preparation details, counts per cushion (or “more than 50”), any fibres fallen through, and deviations or incidents.
Applications and practical value
- Validates fibre-proof performance for manufacturers of mattresses, duvets, padded garments, upholstery and quilted products.
- Used by textile testing laboratories, quality assurance and product development teams to:
- Compare fabric constructions or finishes for resistance to fibre migration.
- Establish supplier specifications and acceptance criteria for linings, interlinings and outer fabrics.
- Support product claims about durability and down/fibre containment.
Who should use this standard
- Bedding and quilted product manufacturers
- Apparel and technical textile producers
- Independent textile testing labs and certification bodies
- R&D and QA teams specifying fill containment performance
