Overview
EN 12490:2010 - issued by CEN - is the European reference method for assessing creosote penetration and retention in preservative‑treated solid wood. The standard specifies sampling guidance, visual assessment of creosote penetration and a laboratory extraction method to quantify creosote retention in freshly treated timber, principally to verify conformity with requirements expressed in EN 351‑1. It also gives handling rules for test samples (cooling, storage) and notes where plant methods (e.g. weighing charge before/after treatment) may be acceptable if a validated relationship is demonstrated.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & purpose: Reference methods for determining depth of creosote penetration and mass retention of creosote in treated timber; guidance on sampling and sample handling.
- Sampling rules:
- Allow freshly treated wood to cool to ambient before sampling.
- Penetration measurements must be taken immediately after sampling to avoid migration.
- For retention, batches should be sampled within 30 days of treatment.
- Composite samples must contain enough material to yield at least 1 g creosote.
- Penetration assessment:
- Visual measurement of the furthest point (mm) where creosote is visible from the surface, following EN 351‑2 recommendations.
- If sapwood/heartwood boundary is unclear, chemical tests (Annex A) may be used; where indistinguishable, treat all as sapwood.
- Retention determination (laboratory extraction):
- Soxhlet-type extraction with toluene, water trap (Dean & Stark), and reflux condenser as described.
- Apparatus cleaning and drying procedures (e.g., oven at 115 ± 5 °C for thimbles) are specified to avoid loss and contamination.
- Extraction time: minimum 2 h up to 6 h and continued until solvent becomes colourless.
- Use water of analytical grade (EN ISO 3696) and specified reagents for cleaning.
- Reporting & traceability: Test report requirements and definitions (batch, charge, sampling unit, composite sample) are defined for conformity assessment.
Applications and users
- Quality control and acceptance testing in timber treatment plants and laboratory testing facilities.
- Specifiers and procurement teams verifying compliance with EN 351‑1 preservative penetration and retention classes.
- Certification bodies, regulatory authorities and consultants evaluating long‑term durability of creosote‑treated railway sleepers, poles, marine uses and other treated timber products.
- Useful for product development, process validation and establishing plant‑level correlations (e.g., mass‑balance methods) against the reference method.

chosen sampling plan for the determination of retention
[EN 1001-2:2005, 4.15]
3.5
penetration requirement
minimum depth to which the creosote is required to penetrate the wood
[Adapted from EN 1001-2.2005, 4.59]
3.6
retention requirement
loading of the creosote that is required in the analytical zone
[Adapted from EN 1001-2:2005, 4.73]
NOTE 1 For definition of "analytical zone" see 3.1.
NOTE 2 The retention requirement is expressed in kilograms of creosote per cubic metre of treated wood.
3.7
sampling unit
unit (for example a pole, a sleeper, a board or a fence post) of preservative treated wood taken from a batch
or charge of preservative treated wood
[Adapted from EN 1001-2:2005, 4.75]
NOTE For definition of "batch" see 3.2. For definition of "charge" see 3.3.
3.8
test sample
portion of preservative treated wood taken from a sampling unit, in accordance with the recommendations of
EN 351-2
3.9
transition wood
wood in a zone between the true sapwood and the true heartwood
[Adapted from EN 1001-2:2005, 1.45]
NOTE This is distinguishable only in a very few wood species. In general its treatability is similar to that of heartwood.
4 Sampling of creosote-treated wood for the determination of penetration and
retention
4.1 General requirements
The acquisition of sampling units and test samples shall follow the procedures established in EN 351-1 and
EN 351-2. Additionally, when sampling from a freshly treated batch, the wood shall be allowed to cool to
ambient temperature before taking test samples.
4.2 Specific requirements for test samples for the determination of penetration
The penetration of creosote in each of the test samples shall be determined immediately after sampling,
according to Clause 5, in order to avoid creosote migration from the treated to the untreated area.
4.3 Specific requirements for test samples for the determination of retention
A batch to be sampled for the determination of retention shall be sampled at a time less than 30 days after the
treatment.
NOTE 1 The retention requirements defined by the specifier are only applicable to treated wood as produced, not to
the treated wood in service.
The composite sample for a batch or charge shall comprise test samples taken in accordance with the
chosen sampling plan. Sufficient test sample material shall be taken to ensure that at least 1 g of creosote is
contained in the composite sample.
NOTE 2 Wood treated with creosote by vacuum/high pressure processes can normally be expected to contain more than
10 % by mass of creosote. Therefore, it will require approximately 10 g to 12 g of creosoted wood to obtain at least 1 g of
creosote in the composite sample.
NOTE 3 The larger the number of test samples included in the composite sample, the more accurate the resultant
retention determination should be.
As soon as possible after the test samples have been obtained, and the penetration measured the wood not
included in the specified analytical zone of the test samples shall be removed. The remaining wood constitutes
the composite sample for the determination of retention.
NOTE 4 If the penetration and retention are determined from the same test samples, the penetration should be
determined before any wood is removed from the test samples.
The composite sample shall be stored in a stoppered glass bot
