Doors - Operating forces - Requirements and classification

This European Standard is applicable to hinged/pivoted and sliding doorsets with latches, for pedestrian use. It defines the classification of the test results for the forces and/or torques to open/close doors and to engage/release and lock/unlock the hardware using a key or handle, after testing in accordance with EN 12046 2.
It is only applicable to the manual operation of doorsets.
The classification of forces for doorsets with self-closing devices engaged is excluded from this test method. It is also not applicable to doorsets with special hardware, e.g. emergency exit devices.
The tests are applicable to doorsets of any material.
The operation of some glazed doors (door high windows) involves hardware with latches and may be classified in accordance with this European Standard.

Overview

EN 12217:2015 - Doors: Operating forces - Requirements and classification is a CEN European Standard that classifies the forces and torques required to operate pedestrian doorsets (hinged/pivoted and sliding, with latches) when operated manually. It defines how test results obtained in accordance with EN 12046‑2 are translated into performance classes for opening, closing and for engaging/releasing and locking/unlocking hardware using a key or handle. The standard applies to doorsets of any material (including some glazed doors with high windows) but excludes tests when self‑closing devices are engaged and excludes doorsets with special hardware (e.g. emergency exit devices).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Manual operation only; pedestrian doorsets with latches; any material; excludes self‑closing engaged tests and special hardware.
  • Test method: Classification is based on test data obtained per EN 12046‑2 (Operating forces - Test method - Part 2: Doors).
  • Classification rule: The final total class assigned to a doorset is the lowest class obtained among the individual measured forces and/or torques.
  • Higher-value rule: For each hardware type, the higher measured value (force or torque) determines the class.
  • Numeric class thresholds (summary from Table 1):
    • Closing/commence motion (maximum force, N): Class 1 = 75 N; Class 2 = 50 N; Class 3 = 25 N; Class 4 = 10 N; Class 5 = 50 N.
    • Hand‑operated hardware:
      • Maximum torque (Nm): Class 1 = 10; Class 2 = 5; Class 3 = 2.5; Class 4 = 1; Class 5 = 5.
      • Maximum force (N): Class 1 = 100; Class 2 = 50; Class 3 = 25; Class 4 = 10; Class 5 = 50.
    • Finger‑operated hardware:
      • Maximum torque (Nm): Class 1 = 5; Class 2 = 2.5; Class 3 = 1.5; Class 4 = 1; Class 5 = 1.5.
      • Maximum force (N): Class 1 = 20; Class 2 = 10; Class 3 = 6; Class 4 = 4; Class 5 = 6.
    • Note: consult the full standard for the official table and measurement details.
  • Definitions: Uses terminology from EN 12519 and references ergonomic definitions from EN 1005‑1.

Applications and users

EN 12217:2015 is practical for:

  • Door and hardware manufacturers specifying product performance and quality.
  • Test laboratories performing EN 12046‑2 tests and producing compliance reports.
  • Architects, specifiers and building services professionals selecting doors for accessibility, usability and safety.
  • Compliance officers and procurement teams ensuring doors meet required operating‑force classes.
  • Accessibility assessors evaluating manual operation effort for users with reduced strength or dexterity.

Related standards

  • EN 12046‑2 (test method used to generate classification data)
  • EN 12519 (terminology for windows and pedestrian doors)
  • EN 1005‑1 (human physical performance terms referenced)

Note: EN 12217:2015 updated EN 12217:2003 (added Class 5, clarified terms and classification rules and allows use of historical EN 12046‑2 data). For implementation, always refer to the full standard text for test procedures, measurement methods and normative details.
