Overview
CEN/TS 17754:2022 - Inorganic fertilizers: Determination of specific micronutrients defines referenced analytical methods for measuring total and water‑soluble micronutrients in inorganic fertilizers. It supports compliance with Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 for EU fertilizing products classified as PFC 1(C) and PFC 7 (when blends only contain PFC 1(C), PFC 2 and PFC 5). The Technical Specification establishes which extraction and determination procedures laboratories and manufacturers should use for consistent, comparable results.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope covers the following micronutrients (total and water‑soluble where applicable): boron, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, zinc, and the sum of declared micronutrients in compound micronutrient fertilizers.
- Sampling and sample preparation must follow EN 1482 series to ensure representativeness.
- Extraction methods:
- Total micronutrients: extraction with aqua regia (EN 16964).
- Water‑soluble forms: water extraction and removal of organics (EN 16962).
- Determination techniques referenced:
- ICP‑AES (EN 16963) for multi‑element determination.
- FAAS (EN 16965) as an alternative for Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn.
- Boron: azomethine‑H spectrometry (EN 17041) for ≤10 % B and acidimetric titration (EN 17042) for >10 % B; ICP‑AES may also be used.
- Molybdenum: complex with ammonium thiocyanate spectrometry (EN 17043) for ≤10 % Mo; ICP‑AES may also be used.
- Important limitation: the EN 17041 boron method is unsuitable if iron concentration exceeds boron by more than 20×.
- The sum of declared micronutrients must include all forms (suspended, complexed/chelated, dissolved) based on individual total determinations.
Applications and users
- Intended for: fertilizer manufacturers, quality control and analytical laboratories, conformity assessment bodies, regulators and notified bodies verifying compliance with EU fertilizing product rules.
- Practical uses:
- Routine QC of inorganic fertilizer batches.
- Regulatory compliance testing under Regulation (EU) 2019/1009.
- Product labeling and declaration of micronutrient content.
- Supporting product development and formulation of micronutrient blends.
