Overview
EN 3524:2023 specifies material and acceptance requirements for Aerospace series - Steel 15CrMoV6 (W.nr. 1.7334, ASD‑STAN FE‑PL1505) in the form of air‑melted, hardened and tempered sheets and strips. The standard covers products with thickness 2 mm ≤ a ≤ 6 mm and tensile strength 1 080 MPa ≤ Rm ≤ 1 280 MPa, intended for aerospace applications. EN 3524:2023 supersedes the 2007 edition and aligns with the EN aerospace materials series organization.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Material designation: Steel 15CrMoV6 (1.7334).
- Chemical composition (selected ranges): C 0.12–0.18 %, Si ≤0.20 %, Mn 0.80–1.10 %, P ≤0.020 %, S ≤0.015 %, Cr 1.25–1.50 %, Mo 0.80–1.00 %, Ni ≤0.30 % (see standard table for full details).
- Melting method: Air melted.
- Form and production: Rolled sheets and strips, thickness 2–6 mm.
- Heat treatment / delivery conditions: Softened (A) and hardened & tempered (U). Specified austenitizing 955 °C–995 °C (OQ or AC) and tempering 595 °C–645 °C (AC).
- Mechanical properties: Proof stress Rp0.2 ≥ 930 MPa; tensile strength Rm 1 080–1 280 MPa; elongation A50 ≥ 9 %.
- Hardness: Softened condition HB or HV ≤ 197; hardened and tempered HV between 335 and 382.
- Testing, inspection and characteristics: Direction of test pieces LT; grain size ≥ G5 (EN 4700‑001); cleanliness/inclusion Category 1 per EN 2951; visual testing (VT) for external imperfections; dimensional and marking inspection per EN 4700‑001.
- Qualification: Product qualification per EN 2043 - programme to be agreed between manufacturer and purchaser.
Applications and Users
EN 3524:2023 is applicable wherever high‑strength, hardened and tempered aerospace steels in sheet or strip form are required. Typical users include:
- Aerospace OEMs and tier suppliers specifying metallic semi‑finished products
- Materials and metallurgical engineers selecting steels for structural or high‑stress parts
- Procurement and quality assurance teams enforcing acceptance criteria
- Heat‑treatment shops and testing laboratories performing mechanical, micrographic and hardness tests
This standard supports consistent supply of 15CrMoV6 material with controlled chemistry, heat treatment and mechanical performance for aerospace design and manufacturing.
