Overview
SIST EN 27574-2:1997 (EN 27574-2:1988, ISO 7574-2:1985) sets out statistical methods for determining and verifying the noise emission values stated on labels of individual machines and equipment. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this standard specifically addresses scenarios where each unit of machinery is individually labelled with its own unique noise emission value, rather than batch or average values.
This part of the standard helps manufacturers, suppliers, and regulatory bodies ensure that proclaimed noise emission levels are accurate, measurable, and verifiable for every machine produced. It also provides procedures for compliance evaluation, protecting stakeholders and end-users from excessive or misrepresented noise emissions.
Key Topics
- Labelled noise values: Guidelines for determining the specific noise emission value to display on the label of each individual machine or equipment.
- Statistical methods: Procedures for statistically estimating and verifying noise emission values, ensuring they are below the specified declared limits.
- Compliance checks: Steps for testing whether an individual machine's noise emission complies with its stated label value.
- Testing requirements: Assumptions regarding the use of certified testing laboratories with properly trained personnel and calibrated test facilities.
- Definitions and terms: Adopts definitions from ISO 7574-1, providing consistency in terminology.
- Scope of application: Applies to all kinds of stated values including those set by manufacturing contracts, regulatory authorities, or voluntary product labels.
Applications
SIST EN 27574-2:1997 is valuable across several practical scenarios in industrial acoustics and noise control:
- Manufacturing quality control: Enables manufacturers of individual machines and equipment to declare transparent, verifiable noise emission values, supporting product compliance and differentiation in the market.
- Product labelling: Ensures that noise emission labels reflect individually measured and verified values, improving consumer confidence and meeting regulatory requirements.
- Regulatory and market surveillance: Facilitates government agencies and authorities in verifying that equipment on the market meets stated acoustical performance claims.
- Purchaser assurance: Allows buyers in commercial or industrial sectors to reliably assess the acoustical impact of machinery before purchase or installation.
- Laboratory procedures: Provides testing laboratories with recognized methods for evaluating and certifying noise emissions of machines on an individual basis.
Implementing this standard helps industries reduce environmental noise pollution, comply with legal noise limits, and enhance occupational safety.
Related Standards
The guidelines and methodologies in SIST EN 27574-2:1997 interrelate with several other international standards for noise measurement and labelling, including:
- ISO 7574-1: Acoustics - Statistical methods for determining and verifying stated noise emission values of machinery and equipment - Part 1: General considerations and definitions
- ISO 7574-4: Methods for stated values for batches of machines
- ISO 4871: Acoustics - Declaration and verification of noise emission values of machinery and equipment

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International
Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Esch member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern-
mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take patt in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the ISO Council. They are approved in accordance with ISO procedures requiring at
least 75 % approval by the member bodies voting.
International Standard ISO 7574/2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 43,
Acoustics.
Users should note that all International Standards undergo revision from time to time
and that any reference made herein to any other International Standard implies its
latest edition, unless othetwise stated.
