Precast concrete products - Beam-and-block floor systems - Part 4: Expanded polystyrene blocks
This European Standard deals with the requirements and the basic performance criteria for blocks made in expanded polystyrene (EPS), used in conjunction with precast concrete beams in compliance with EN 15037-1, with or without cast-in-situ concrete for the construction of beam-and-block floor systems. EPS block may be totally made in EPS or combined with different materials such as plaster or wood wool. If EPS is combined with other materials, these materials should not contribute to more than 50 % of the mechanical resistance of the block. If not, the block is covered by EN 15037-5, Precast concrete products - Beam-and-block floor systems - Part 5: Lightweight blocks for simple formwork. Examples of typology of floor systems are given in Annex B of EN 15037-1:2008.

Overview
SIST EN 15037-4:2010/FprA1:2012 is a European Standard developed by CEN, focusing on requirements and basic performance criteria for expanded polystyrene (EPS) blocks used in precast concrete beam-and-block floor systems. This standard details the properties, testing procedures, and conformity assessment for EPS blocks when utilized with precast concrete beams (as specified in EN 15037-1), with or without cast-in-situ concrete overlays.
EPS blocks covered by this standard may be entirely made from EPS or may include combinations with other materials such as plaster or wood wool, provided these do not contribute more than 50% of the block's mechanical resistance. For blocks where non-EPS materials contribute more than 50% to mechanical resistance, EN 15037-5 is applicable.
Key Topics
SIST EN 15037-4:2010/FprA1:2012 addresses the following key areas:
- Product requirements: Specifies performance criteria for EPS blocks in beam-and-block floor systems.
- Reaction to fire: Outlines testing and declaration of Euroclass fire performance according to EN 13501-1, typically achieving Euroclass E or F for EPS blocks on the market.
- Dangerous substances: Requires compliance with national regulations on dangerous substances, including verification and declaration based on use region.
- Testing methods: Cites EN ISO 11925-2 for fire testing and clarifies procedures for compressive resistance and other relevant characteristics.
- Attestation of conformity: Defines systems for conformity assessment according to EU regulations, including requirements for CE marking, factory production control, and involvement of notified bodies.
- Documentation: Lists obligations for certificates and declarations of conformity, ensuring traceability and quality across European Economic Area markets.
Applications
Beam-and-block floor systems using EPS blocks are widely implemented in residential, commercial, and industrial construction throughout Europe due to their light weight, ease of installation, and good thermal properties. Typical applications include:
- Floor slabs: For new buildings and extensions, where fast assembly and reduced structural weight are priorities.
- Thermal insulation: EPS blocks provide improved thermal resistance for energy-efficient building envelopes.
- Simplified formwork: Where partial block composition (EPS with plaster or wood wool) can reduce on-site labor and speed up project timelines.
- Renovations: Lightweight EPS blocks are suitable for refurbishing older structures, minimizing load increases on existing floors.
Compliance with SIST EN 15037-4:2010/FprA1:2012 ensures that manufacturers and construction professionals can deliver safe, reliable, and regulatory-compliant floor systems. Proper certification and CE marking streamline acceptance across EU member states.
Related Standards
To ensure comprehensive compliance and compatibility, reference to the following related standards is essential:
- EN 15037-1: Precast concrete products - Beam-and-block floor systems - Part 1: General requirements.
- EN 15037-5: Precast concrete products - Beam-and-block floor systems - Part 5: Lightweight blocks for simple formwork (for blocks with >50% non-EPS material contribution).
- EN ISO 11925-2: Reaction to fire tests – Single-flame source test.
- EN 13501-1: Fire classification of construction products and building elements.
- Commission Decision 2012/202/EU and 1999/94/EC: EU decisions pertaining to conformity assessment and CE marking for construction products.
For manufacturers, builders, and specifiers, adherence to SIST EN 15037-4:2010/FprA1:2012 and its related standards ensures confidence in the use of EPS blocks in structural floor applications, supporting building quality, energy efficiency, and safety requirements across Europe.

“Precast concrete products”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This document is currently submitted to the Unique Acceptance Procedure.
This amendment deals with the reaction to fire issue and the dangerous substances requirement. It introduces
corrections including title of Annex ZA and reference to European Commission decision.
This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the
European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU Directive(s).
For relationship with EU Directive(s), see informative Annex ZA, which is an integral part of this document.
1 Modification to Clause 2, Normative references
Add the following reference:
"EN ISO 11925-2, Reaction to fire tests — Ignitability of products subjected to direct impingement of flame —
Part 2: Single-flame source test (ISO 11925-2)"
2 Modification to 4.3.5.2, Reaction to fire
Replace the existing text with the following:
"The manufacturer shall declare a Euroclass reaction to fire in accordance with EN 13501-1.
NOTE The experience shows that EPS on the market are classified E or F."
3 Addition of a new sub-clause, 4.3.9,Dangerous substances
Add the following text which has been approved by the European Commission:
"4.3.9 Dangerous substances
National regulations on dangerous substances may require verification and declaration on release, and
sometimes content, when construction products covered by this standard are placed on those markets.
In the absence of European harmonized test methods, verification and declaration on release/content should
be done taking into account national provisions in the place of use.
NOTE An informative database covering European and national provisions on dangerous substances is available at
the Construction web site on EUROPA accessed through: http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/construction/cpd-ds/"
4 Addition of a new sub-clause, 5.4 Reaction to fire test
After 5.3 Compressive resistance test, add the following new sub-clause:
"5.4 Reaction to fire test
For the determination of Euroclass E and F, ignability shall be tested according to EN ISO 11925-2."
Renumber the following sub-clauses accordingly. Replace throughout the text the cross references to 5.4 with
5.5 and the cross references to 5.5 with 5.6.
5 Deletion of the requirement of “Dangerous substances” in Annex ZA
Delete the Warning and Notes 1 and 2 in ZA.1, and the paragraph and the two notes under Figure ZA.2
(starting with “In addition…”) in ZA.3.
(As requested recently by the European Commission the mandated requirement of “Dangerous substances” is
no longer considered in Annex ZA).
6 Modifications to Table ZA.1 Relevant clauses for EPS blocks used in
beam-and-block floor systems
Add the following footnote a to Level and/or class(es) for reaction to fire:
"a The experience shows that EPS on the market are classified E or F."
For the requirement "dangerous substances" in the second column replace “ZA.1 Note” with “4.3.9 Dangerous
substances” and delete “according to ZA.3” in the right column.
To be consistent with the other parts of EN 15037 (Part 2, 3 and 5) delete for the requirement “thermal
conductivity and thermal resistance” in the last column the words “of the floor”.
7 Modification to ZA.2 Procedure for attestation of conformity of EPS blocks for
beam-and-block floor systems
Replace the existing text with the following:
"
ZA.2.1 System of attestation of conformity
The system of attestation of conformity of EPS blocks for beam-and-block floor systems, for the essential
characteristics indicated in Table ZA.1, in accordance with the decision of the Commission 1999/94/EC
of 25 January 1999 as amended by Commission Decision 2012/202/EU of 29 March 2012 (published as L109
