Overview

EN 1090-1:2009/FprA1 (CEN) is a draft amendment to EN 1090-1:2009 that updates the requirements for conformity assessment of structural components made from steel and aluminium. Prepared by CEN/TC 135 and issued as FprA1 (June 2011), the amendment explicitly incorporates deformation at the serviceability limit state (SLS) into the conformity assessment framework and adjusts related tables and ZA (CE-marking) provisions. The change ensures that both load-bearing capacity and serviceability deformations are covered when declaring performance of structural components.

Key topics and requirements

  • Addition of SLS deformation requirement
    • Clause 4.5.1 is amended to include “deformation at serviceability limit state” alongside load-bearing capacity. A new sub-clause 4.5.5 defines that deformations calculated using the appropriate combination of actions must be within limits specified in the design assumptions and/or relevant European Standards (including National Determined Parameters/NDPs).
  • Conformity assessment methods
    • Table 1 (Clause 6.2) is updated to include Deformation at SLS as a characteristic that can be assessed by calculation to the relevant part of EN 1990/EN 1993/EN 1994/EN 1999 or by structural testing/European Technical Specification.
  • Structural characteristics scope
    • Table 2 (Clause 6.3.7) now lists structural characteristics governed by design as: load-bearing capacity, deformation at SLS, fatigue strength and resistance to fire.
  • CE-marking / Declaration adjustments (ZA clauses)
    • ZA.1, ZA.3.3 and ZA.3.5 are modified so deformation at SLS is included in the declaration routes (e.g., NPD entries and references to design calculations and accompanying design brief).

Practical applications and users

Who uses this standard:

  • Structural engineers and designers checking component conformity for both ultimate limit state (ULS) and serviceability (SLS)
  • Fabricators and manufacturers of steel and aluminium structural components preparing declarations of performance
  • Notified/conformity assessment bodies and testing laboratories verifying component performance
  • Specifiers, contractors and authorities overseeing CE marking and regulatory compliance

Typical applications:

  • Demonstrating that component deformations meet design limits for buildings and civil structures
  • Producing conformity documentation for CE marking and construction product regulation compliance
  • Deciding whether assessment should be by calculation (EN 1990/EN 1993/EN 1994/EN 1999) or by structural testing

Related standards

  • EN 1090-1:2009 (base standard)
  • EN 1990 (Basis of structural design)
  • EN 1993 (Steel structures)
  • EN 1994 (Composite steel and concrete structures)
