This document specifies a method for leaching, applicable to test specimens of wood or wood-based products which are subsequently subjected to biological tests.
This document is applicable to:
a)   the pre-conditioning of test specimens prior to their being subjected to a biological test; or
b)   assessment of loss of effectiveness by comparing the performance in a biological test of treated test specimens subjected to this procedure with others that have not undergone any leaching procedure.
NOTE   The method can also be used for pre-conditioning of untreated wood, modified wood and wood-based panel products, whether they received preservative treatment or not.

Overview

EN 84:2020 - "Durability of wood and wood-based products - Accelerated ageing of treated wood prior to biological testing - Leaching procedure" (CEN) specifies a standardized leaching procedure to simulate early loss of soluble preservative components before biological testing. The method is used to pre-condition test specimens of treated or untreated wood, modified wood and wood-based panels prior to exposure to fungi or insects, or to assess loss of effectiveness by comparison with non‑leached controls. EN 84:2020 supersedes EN 84:1997.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Principle: vacuum impregnation with water followed by immersion for a defined period to accelerate leaching of water‑soluble components.
  • Water quality: use water complying with EN ISO 3696, grade 3.
  • Conditioning: specimens conditioned at (20 ± 2) °C and (65 ± 5) % RH before/after leaching as required.
  • Apparatus:
    • Test vessels of inert material (glass for organic solvent systems or suitable plastics).
    • Vacuum desiccator and pump capable of maintaining a pressure of 4 kPa.
    • Non‑reactive weights for ballasting.
  • Leaching procedure:
    • Place specimens (do not mix different species/treatments in one vessel), cover with water and apply vacuum (4 kPa) for minimum 20 min; leave ≥2 h, then drain.
    • Refill with fresh water at ~5:1 water:wood volume ratio and immerse for 14 days with nine water changes (end of day 1 and 2, then seven changes over remaining 12 days at 1–3 day intervals).
  • Drying: condition specimens on non‑absorbent supports until constant mass (two consecutive weighings 24 h apart within ±0.1 g) or at least two weeks.
  • Storage before biological testing: biological tests may start up to 12 months after leaching; the actual interval must be recorded.

Practical applications and users

  • Laboratories performing biological efficacy tests of wood preservatives (fungal and insect resistance).
  • Manufacturers of treated wood and wood-preserving chemicals for product development and quality control.
  • Certification bodies and test houses assessing loss of preservative leachability and real‑world durability.
  • Researchers studying accelerated ageing, environmental leaching of preservatives, and comparative performance of treatments. Practical benefits: ensures reproducible pre‑conditioning across labs, enables fair comparison of treated vs. control specimens, and simulates service exposure for water‑mobile preservative components.

Related standards

  • EN 599-1 (Referenced in EN 84:2020): durability and efficacy testing of preventive wood preservatives.
  • EN ISO 3696 (Water for analytical laboratory use) - referenced for required water quality.

For biological test reports, EN 84:2020 requires explicit citation of the standard, statement of the time between leaching and testing, conditioning temperature/RH, and any deviations from the method. Keywords: EN 84:2020, leaching procedure, accelerated ageing, treated wood, biological testing, wood preservatives, durability.
