Fine ceramics (advanced ceramics, advanced technical ceramics) - Test method for fracture resistance of silicon nitride materials for rolling bearing balls at room temperature by indentation fracture (IF) method (ISO 14627:2012)

ISO 14627:2012 describes a test method that covers the determination of fracture resistance of silicon nitride bearing balls at room temperature by the indentation fracture (IF) method, as specified in ISO 26602.
ISO 14627:2012 is intended for use with monolithic silicon nitride ceramics for bearing balls. It does not include other ceramic materials.
ISO 14627:2012 is for material comparison and quality assurance.

Overview

EN ISO 14627:2025 (identical to ISO 14627:2012) specifies a standardized test method to determine the fracture resistance of monolithic silicon nitride materials for rolling bearing balls at room temperature using the indentation fracture (IF) method. The method is intended for material comparison and quality assurance of advanced/technical ceramics used in bearing applications, not for other ceramic families. It links to ISO 26602 requirements for silicon nitride bearing-ball materials.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test principle: A Vickers diamond pyramid indenter is forced into a polished specimen surface and the indentation diagonal (2a) and associated crack lengths (2c) are measured to calculate indentation fracture resistance K_I,IF.
  • Test conditions:
    • Typical test load: 196.1 N with a 15 s dwell time. If acceptable indentations cannot be obtained, a lower load of 98.07 N may be used (test load must be reported).
    • Room-temperature testing on monolithic silicon nitride bearing balls or sections from the same lot.
  • Specimen preparation:
    • Ground and polished surfaces; surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.1 µm (ISO 4287).
    • Specimen thickness sufficient so crack lengths are unaffected (generally > 3 mm, or >5× crack length 2c).
    • Remove any grinding-induced damage to avoid residual surface stress.
  • Equipment & verification:
    • Testing machine and Vickers indenter in accordance with ISO 6507‑2.
    • Reference blocks per ISO 6507‑3: reference hardness should not differ from the tested material by more than 20%.
  • Data and reporting:
    • Multiple valid indentations (normally at least five, subject to spacing criteria) with measured diagonal and crack sizes.
    • Report test load, dwell time, number of indentations, specimen preparation, and calculation method for K_I,IF.
  • Important note: K_I,IF (indentation fracture resistance) estimates resistance to crack initiation from a localized damage source and is not equivalent to macroscopic fracture toughness K_Ic determined by other fracture mechanics tests.

Applications

  • Quality assurance and lot-to-lot comparison of silicon nitride bearing balls used in high-speed or high-reliability rolling-element bearings.
  • Screening materials for resistance to localized damage, with relevance to wear resistance, rolling contact fatigue, and machining-induced damage behavior.
  • Supporting materials development and process control in manufacturers of advanced ceramics and bearing components.

Who should use this standard

  • Materials engineers, quality managers, and test laboratories in ceramic bearing manufacturing.
  • R&D teams developing silicon nitride formulations or finishing processes.
  • Certification bodies and suppliers who require harmonized, repeatable IF-based fracture-resistance data.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International
Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
