kSIST FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 is a SIST draft of an IEC standard for the 482,6 mm (19 in) mechanical structures series. It specifies additional interface dimensions for injector/extractor handles used with subracks and plug-in units, so compatible hardware can be designed and checked against the same mechanical envelope. Engineers, manufacturers and quality teams use it when they need the handle and receptacle geometry to match across 19 in equipment.

What does kSIST FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 specify?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 specifies only the extra interface dimensions for injection/extractor devices used with subracks and plug-in units according to IEC 60297-3-101. In practice, it tells designers where the handle-related features may go and how much space they need in the 19 in mechanical structure.

What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 separates the handle interface rules into two arrangements: front panel mounted injector/extractor handles and printed board mounted injector/extractor handles. The main task for users is to choose the correct arrangement early, then check the matching subrack and plug-in unit dimensions before tooling or procurement.

Front panel mounted injector/extractor handles

  • Clause 4 says front panel mounted injector/extractor handles need receptacles at the subrack front panel attachment area. That matters because the handle needs a dedicated engagement feature on the rack side.
  • Clause 4 also says these receptacle dimensions do not conflict with the normal front panel interface dimensions of the subrack. In practice, the handle interface is an added geometry, not a replacement for the base subrack interface.
  • Clause 5.1 and Table 1 define the additional subrack aperture height needed for 3U, 6U and 9U subracks. This is the clearance check that tells a designer whether the front-panel handle can physically function.
  • Clause 5.2 allows the handle width to use any horizontal pitch greater than 1HP, but the handle interface shall not cross pitch lines or extend into the usable component area or the subrack height separation plane. That means the handle must stay inside the allocated front-panel envelope.

Printed board mounted injector/extractor handles

  • Clause 4 says printed board mounted injector/extractor handles need receptacles at the front area of the plug-in unit guide inside the subrack filler panel. This is the matching geometry for board-mounted extraction hardware.
  • Clause 4 also states that front panel mounted and printed board mounted handle arrangements are not intended to be combined in one subrack. In practice, a system designer needs to pick one handle concept for the enclosure.
  • Clause 6.1 says the subrack-side receptacle width may be for one printed board section or for the whole subrack width. If the whole width is used, the height clearance of IEC 60297-3-101 is no longer compatible, so box type plug-in units cannot be used as specified there.
  • Clause 6.2 says a 3U printed board may use one or two injector/extractor handles, while 6U and 9U printed boards shall use two handles. That gives a direct rule for handle count by board height.

What terms does kSIST FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 define?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 uses the terms and definitions of IEC 60917-1, so the terminology follows the wider modular mechanical structures vocabulary.

  • Subrack - the rack-like mechanical structure that carries plug-in units in the 19 in system.
  • Plug-in unit - the removable unit that fits into the subrack and may carry the handle interface.
  • Injector/extractor handle - the handle used to insert or remove a unit from the subrack.
  • Front panel mounted injector/extractor handle - the handle arrangement mounted on the plug-in unit front panel.
  • Printed board mounted injector/extractor handle - the handle arrangement mounted on a printed board module.
  • Receptacle - the matching feature that engages the handle on the subrack or plug-in unit side.

Who uses kSIST FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 is used by mechanical designers of electronic equipment, subrack and plug-in unit manufacturers, and system integrators working with 482,6 mm (19 in) hardware. Quality and conformity teams use it to verify dimensional compatibility, while buyers and specifiers use it when they need interchangeable handle interfaces in modular equipment.

What changed in kSIST FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 from the previous edition?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 is the second edition and cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2004. The stated technical changes are that the document was reworked around the modular structure schemes of the IEC 60297-3-XXX series, as clarified by IEC TR 60297-3-1:2023, and that all figures were improved so the interface dimensions and definitions are clearer.

Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026?

  • IEC TR 60297-3-1:2023 - gives the technological schemes and applications for the 482,6 mm (19 in) series.
  • IEC 60297-3-101 - defines the subracks and associated plug-in units that this part extends with handle interfaces.
  • IEC 60917-1 - supplies the terms and definitions used throughout the document.

What does the kSIST FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 document contain?

The document contains one scope clause, one clause of normative references, one clause on terms and definitions, and two technical clauses covering the two handle arrangements. It includes Figure 1 for the conventional 19-inch subrack structure, Figures 2 and 3 for arrangement overviews, and Figures 4 to 7 for interface dimensions. Table 1 gives the aperture height dimensions for the subrack sizes used with front panel mounted injector/extractor handles. These figures and the table are used for design checking, dimensional definition and compatibility verification of subracks and plug-in units.

Injector/extractor handle –
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to
promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards,
Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides
(hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees;
any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory
work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also
participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has
representation from all interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC
National Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical
content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are
used or for any misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC
Publications transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications.
Any divergence between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication
shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide
conformity assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not
responsible for any services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual
experts and members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal
injury, property damage or other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for
