FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 is a standard in the 482,6 mm (19 in) mechanical structures series for electronic equipment, prepared in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) system. It specifies the additional interface dimensions for injector/extractor handles used with subracks and plug-in units, so equipment makers can match front-panel and printed-board mounting arrangements.

What does FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 specify?

FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 covers only the extra interface dimensions for injector/extractor devices used with subracks and plug-in units according to IEC 60297-3-101. It is organized around two handle arrangements: front panel mounted injector/extractor handles and printed board mounted injector/extractor handles.

The document is structured as:

  • Clause 1 - Scope
  • Clause 2 - Normative references
  • Clause 3 - Terms and definitions
  • Clause 4 - Injector/extractor handles for plug-in units
  • Clause 5 - Front panel mounted injector/extractor handle
  • Clause 6 - Printed board mounted injector/extractor handle
  • Bibliography

The main content is in the dimensional figures and the one table for subrack aperture height. Figures 1 to 7 show the arrangement overviews and interface dimensions that users need when designing compatible hardware.

What are the key requirements of FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026?

FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 defines the added interface dimensions needed so injector/extractor handles work with IEC 60297-3-101 subracks and plug-in units. In practice, this is the document to consult when a design must leave the right clearances, receptacles, and mounting areas for handle operation.

Clause 4 - Handle arrangements

Clause 4 separates the two basic cases. Front panel mounted handles need receptacles at the front panel attachment area of the subrack, while printed board mounted handles need receptacles at the front area of the plug-in unit guide inside the subrack filler panel.

This distinction matters because the two arrangements are not interchangeable in the same way. Designers need to choose one concept early, because the mechanical interface and the occupied space differ.

Clause 5 - Front panel mounted injector/extractor handle

Clause 5 defines the additional subrack interface dimensions for front panel mounted handles. Table 1 gives the required aperture height dimensions for the subrack, and Figure 4 shows the corresponding interface geometry.

Clause 5 also sets the handle width rule for plug-in units. The handle can use any horizontal pitch above 1HP, but it shall not cross pitch lines or extend into the usable component area or the subrack height separation plane.

Clause 6 - Printed board mounted injector/extractor handle

Clause 6 covers the subrack and plug-in unit interfaces for printed board mounted handles. The subrack side can be arranged for one printed board section or for the full subrack width.

That full-width option has an important practical consequence: it can create incompatibility with IEC 60297-3-101 height clearance rules, so box type plug-in units cannot be used as specified there. Clause 6 also states that 3U printed boards may use one or two handles, while 6U and 9U printed boards shall use two handles.

Dimensional references

The document uses millimetre-based interface drawings throughout. In practice, the figures are the working design documents for checking whether the handle, subrack, and plug-in unit fit together without interfering with other mechanical parts.

What terms does FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 define?

FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 uses the terms and definitions from IEC 60917-1. The most important terms for readers are:

  • Injector/extractor handle - a handle used to help insert or remove a plug-in unit.
  • Subrack - the rack-like structure that carries the plug-in units.
  • Plug-in unit - the removable unit mounted in the subrack.
  • Receptacle - the mating feature that receives the handle interface.
  • Horizontal pitch (HP) - the horizontal modular spacing used in the 19 in series.
  • Printed board - the board-mounted arrangement addressed in Clause 6.
  • Front panel - the visible mounting face used in the arrangement of Clause 5.

Who uses FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026?

FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 is used by designers and manufacturers of 19 in subracks, plug-in units, and printed board modules. It is also relevant to mechanical engineering teams, enclosure suppliers, and system integrators who need the handle interface to fit the rest of the chassis.

Quality and procurement teams use it to check compatibility before release or sourcing. Test and verification teams use the figures and dimensional rules to confirm that the chosen handle arrangement fits the intended mechanical architecture.

What changed in FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 from the previous edition?

FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 is the second edition and replaces the first edition published in 2004. It is described as a technical revision.

The stated changes are:

  • the document was aligned with the modular structure schemes used across the IEC 60297-3-XXX series, as clarified by IEC TR 60297-3-1:2023
  • all figures were improved to make the interface dimensions and definitions clearer for users

Which standards are used with FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026?

FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 cites three normative references:

  • IEC TR 60297-3-1:2023 - provides the technological schemes and applications for the 482,6 mm (19 in) series
  • IEC 60297-3-101 - gives the subracks and associated plug-in units that this part extends
  • IEC 60917-1 - supplies the terms and definitions used in the document

These references are part of the application chain, so a design based on this part is expected to be consistent with the geometry and terminology in those documents.

What does the FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 document contain?

FprEN IEC 60297-3-102:2026 contains arrangement overviews, dimensional interface drawings, and one table of aperture height dimensions. Figure 1 shows the conventional 19-inch subrack structure, and Figures 2 and 3 show the two handle arrangement overviews.

Figures 4 to 7 give the interface dimensions for the subrack and plug-in unit sides of both handle types. Table 1 provides the subrack aperture height values used for front panel mounted handles. These are the parts a designer would use when laying out the front panel, guide area, and receptacle positions.
