Overview
EN 60297-3-102:2004 (IEC 60297-3-102:2004) is a CLC/CENELEC adoption that specifies the additional interface dimensions for injector/extractor handles used with 482.6 mm (19 in) subracks and plug-in units. It does not replace EN 60297-3-101; instead it defines the extra mechanical interface details required when injector/extractor devices are fitted to subracks or plug-in units. The standard covers both front-panel mounted (Type A) and printed-board mounted (Type B) handle arrangements and is intended to ensure mechanical compatibility and predictable behavior in rack-mounted electronic equipment.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Additional interface dimensions for injector/extractor devices used with subracks and plug-in units according to EN/IEC 60297-3-101. Can be used with EN 60297-3-103 (keying/alignment).
- Handle types: Defines two primary arrangements:
- Type A - front panel mounted injector/extractor; note that Type A can create an incompatible subrack to EN 60297-3-101 (i.e., additional apertures/features required).
- Type B - printed-board mounted injector/extractor.
- Interface dimensions: Specifies aperture sizes, mounting planes and pitch-line constraints for subrack receptacles and plug-in units, including examples for common subrack heights (3U, 6U, 9U) and requirements that handle elements do not intrude into the usable component area or subrack separation planes.
- Pitch and width rules: The handle width can occupy any integer horizontal pitch (n × 1HP) but must not exceed pitch lines or protrude into component areas.
- Normative references: Relies on EN/IEC 60297-3-101 (subracks and plug-in units) and IEC 60917-1 (modular order practices) for baseline dimensions and terms.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Equipment designers and mechanical engineers designing 19 in subracks, plug-in units, faceplates and guides will use this standard to specify correct cutouts and mounting detail for injector/extractor handles.
- PCB and front-panel designers integrating printed-board or front-panel mounted handles to ensure proper clearances.
- Manufacturers of rack-mount systems, telecom and data centre equipment to achieve interoperability and avoid mechanical clashes.
- Test labs and compliance teams verifying that mechanical interfaces conform to EN/IEC 60297 series requirements.
- Procurement and specification writers who need formal, interoperable mechanical definitions for tender documents.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
