Overview

SIST EN ISO 28722:2012 (identical to ISO 28722:2008) is an international standard developed by CEN, specifying the requirements for vitreous and porcelain enamel coatings applied to steel panels intended for architectural use. The standard provides guidelines for both heavy-gauge and light-gauge cold-rolled steel panels, addressing their suitability for interior and exterior applications in architectural projects. Key aspects include the functional and aesthetic properties of enamelled steel panels, as well as their resistance to graffiti, ensuring long-term durability and visual appeal in demanding environments.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Applies to enamel-coated, plane, cold-rolled steel panels for architectural use, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Panel Types: Covers both heavy-gauge (thicker steel substrates) and light-gauge panels (with thinner steel skins).
  • Functional Characteristics:
    • Adherence: Requirements for the enamel coating's strong adhesion to steel.
    • Porosity: Limits on open pores to prevent corrosion, especially in exterior installations.
    • Abrasion, Impact, and Scratch Resistance: Benchmarks for durability and preservation of appearance.
    • Hardness and Flatness: Ensures structural suitability for architectural surfaces.
    • Acid Resistance: Specifies performance for exposure to chemicals and weather.
  • Aesthetic Features:
    • Surface Appearance and Gloss: Visual quality measures and gloss threshold agreement.
    • Colour Consistency: Requirements for stability and uniformity of colour, as agreed upon by stakeholders.
  • Graffiti Resistance: Specifies that after proper curing, various paints and inks must be removable without changing the enamel surface's gloss or colour.

Applications

  • Architectural Facades: Used extensively as cladding on modern buildings for both decorative and weather-resistant functions.
  • Interior Panels: Ideal for high-traffic areas like public spaces, transportation hubs, and commercial interiors requiring robust, graffiti-resistant surfaces.
  • Public Infrastructure: Applicable to underground stations, pedestrian walkways, and other public amenities that benefit from easy-to-clean, durable steel surfaces.
  • Signage and Decorative Elements: Enamelled steel panels are suited for customized architectural signage and art installations due to their stability and capacity for creative finishes.

This standard ensures that panels meet the quality benchmarks necessary for modern architectural demands, offering performance and longevity while maintaining design flexibility.

Related Standards

For further guidance on the technical requirements and related testing methods referenced in SIST EN ISO 28722:2012, the following standards are relevant:

  • EN 10209: Cold rolled low carbon steel flat products for vitreous enamelling - Technical delivery conditions.
  • ISO 2178: Measurement of coating thickness - Magnetic method.
  • ISO 2813: Paints and varnishes - Determination of specular gloss.
  • ISO 4532: Determination of resistance of enamelled articles to impact.
  • ISO 8289: Low voltage test for detecting and locating defects in enamel coatings.
  • EN 101: Ceramic tiles - Determination of scratch hardness according to Mohs.
  • ISO 15695: Determination of scratch resistance of enamel finishes.
  • ISO 28706-1 and ISO 28706-2: Determination of resistance to chemical corrosion for enamel coatings.

By adhering to SIST EN ISO 28722:2012, manufacturers, architects, and contractors can ensure enamel-coated steel panels deliver optimal performance, aesthetic quality, and resilience against environmental and human impacts in architectural applications.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
