Overview

EN ISO 4136:2022 - “Destructive tests on welds in metallic materials - Transverse tensile test (ISO 4136:2022)” is a CEN-adopted International Standard that specifies specimen sizes and the procedure for carrying out transverse tensile tests on welded butt joints. The test determines the tensile strength of the joint and the location of fracture in metallic materials in any product form. This fourth edition (2022) replaces EN ISO 4136:2012 and aligns with ISO testing practice and European implementation requirements.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Applies to welded butt joints in metallic materials; used to assess joint integrity by pulling a transverse specimen to rupture.
  • Test principle: A continuously increasing tensile load is applied until rupture; results record tensile strength and fracture location.
  • Temperature control: Tests are carried out at ambient temperature between 10 °C and 35 °C; controlled-condition tests at (23 ± 5) °C. Testing temperature must be reported.
  • Specimen location and marking:
    • Specimen is taken transverse to the weld with the weld axis centered along the parallel length.
    • Each test piece and specimen must be clearly marked to identify origin and working direction where relevant.
    • For small-diameter pipes (D ≤ 50 mm, unless otherwise specified), testing may be performed on the whole pipe.
  • Preparation, extraction and machining:
    • Extraction methods must not alter specimen properties. For steel, shearing is excluded for thicknesses > 8 mm; thermal cutting must be ≥ 8 mm from the final parallel length surfaces.
    • For other metallic materials, shearing and thermal cutting are excluded; machining or non-thermal cutting methods are required.
    • Surface preparation and exact specimen dimensions follow the standard’s figures and Table 1 symbols (e.g., b, L, S, t).
  • Post-test examination and reporting:
    • Record tensile strength, fracture location, and examine fracture surfaces.
    • Include specimen details, heat treatment/ageing history (if any), testing temperature, and methods used in the test report.

Applications and users

  • Who uses it: Welding engineers, quality inspectors, third‑party testing laboratories, fabrication shops, metallurgists, R&D teams and certification bodies.
  • Practical uses:
    • Verifying weld quality in production and after procedure qualification.
    • Failure analysis and root-cause investigation when weld fracture behavior is under review.
    • Supporting conformity assessment for welded structures and components across industries (pressure equipment, pipelines, automotive, shipbuilding, construction).

Related standards

  • ISO 6892-1 / ISO 6892-2 - Metallic materials tensile testing (room and elevated temperature methods) - referenced for general tensile test principles.
  • ISO 4063 - Welding process nomenclature.
  • EN ISO 4136:2022 is the CEN-endorsed version of ISO 4136:2022.
