Furniture - Assessment of the surface reflectance

This document specifies a method for the assessment of the surface reflectance of furniture surfaces and relates to rigid surfaces of all finished products regardless of materials, except for finishes on leather and fabrics, which are excluded from this document.
This document is applicable to the test, intended to be carried out on finished furniture, but can be carried out on test panels of the same material, finished in an identical manner to the finished product, and of a size sufficient to meet the requirements of the test.
The test method is not applicable to some metallic paints and pearly coatings.

Overview

EN 13721:2023 is the CEN standard that defines a standardized method for the assessment of the surface reflectance of furniture. It applies to rigid finished surfaces of furniture products and to test panels finished identically to the product. Finishes on leather and fabrics are excluded, and the method is not applicable to some metallic paints and pearly coatings.

This standard is intended for manufacturers, test laboratories and quality control teams that require repeatable, colorimetric evaluation of surface lightness and reflectance for production verification and product specification.

Key Topics

  • Scope and exclusions: applies to finished rigid furniture surfaces; excludes leather, fabrics and certain metallic/pearly coatings.
  • Measurement principle: reflectance or the related trichromatic compound (lightness factor Y) is measured with photometric equipment using a standardized illuminant and observer.
  • Measurement geometries: recommended geometries are 45°/0° or d/8°; 45°/0° is preferable for textured surfaces.
  • Standard observer and illuminant: use CIE standard observers and illuminant D65 as specified in EN ISO/CIE 11664 parts 1 and 2. For 45°/0° use the CIE 1931 observer; for d/8° use the CIE 1964 observer.
  • Equipment: a spectrophotometer or tristimulus colourimeter compliant with EN ISO 18314-1:2018 is acceptable.
  • Conditioning: test units or panels must be conditioned at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % RH for at least 24 hours; tests are carried out at the same temperature.
  • Calibration and references: instruments must be calibrated before use, with reference scales and primary/working standards per EN ISO 18314-1:2018.
  • Test procedure and validation: measure the lightness factor Y at nine points on the surface and report the mean; if the spread of single values exceeds 20% of the mean, the measurement is invalid and the procedure is repeated on three different points.

Applications

  • Quality control and production acceptance of furniture finishes
  • Final inspection and visual correlation of surface appearance
  • Colorants control and verification of finish consistency across batches
  • Laboratory testing and certification where objective luminance/reflectance data are required

Practical value

Using EN 13721:2023 helps standardize reflectance measurement across facilities, reducing disputes about visual appearance and enabling data-driven acceptance criteria. The standard specifies required environmental conditioning, measurement geometry, observer/illuminant selection and reporting elements to ensure reproducibility.

Related Standards

  • EN ISO/CIE 11664-1:2019 (CIE standard colorimetric observers)
  • EN ISO/CIE 11664-2 (CIE standard illuminants)
  • EN ISO/CIE 11664-3 (CIE tristimulus values)
  • EN ISO 18314-1:2018 (Practical colour measurement)

For test reporting, follow Clause 11 of EN 13721:2023 to include reference to the standard, unit/panel details, measurement results (mean/min/max Y), instrument and geometry, observer, deviations and test facility information.
