General Information
Overview - EN 15599-2:2010 (CEN)
EN 15599-2:2010 is a European (CEN) specification for in-situ thermal insulation formed from expanded perlite (EP) products used on building equipment and industrial installations. It covers installed-product requirements for four EP product types - Perlite Aggregate (EPA), Coated Perlite (EPC), Hydrophobic Perlite (EPH) and Premixed Perlite (EPM) - intended for service temperatures from approximately –270 °C to +650 °C. This part of the EN 15599 series specifies installation checks, test procedures and the installer’s declaration for installed perlite insulation (non factory-made shapes and boards).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and product types: Applies to EPA, EPC, EPH and EPM with < 1 % by mass organic material (as referenced in EN 15599‑1:2010).
- Thermal resistance and thickness: Required thickness (d) is calculated before installation using the declared thermal conductivity (λD) and the specified thermal resistance (Rs) with the formula:
- d = Rs · λD
- Installed thickness acceptance:
- The mean installed declared thickness must be at least the calculated thickness.
- No individual thickness measurement shall be less than 80% of the specified value.
- Cavity fill: Cavities must be filled according to the specifier’s instructions; the installer must verify cavity fill completeness.
- In‑situ measurements and verification:
- Installer must measure installed thickness (using reference marks and calibrated depth gauges).
- Minimum of five thickness measurements per 100 m² of insulation area.
- Pin-and-plate method (EN 823:1994, Annex A) is used in case of dispute.
- Installer’s declaration: Installer must provide documented declarations to the customer including product trade name, declared and required thermal resistance, required and installed thickness, material volume used, installation date and confirmation the work followed the standard.
Applications and users
- Practical for building services engineers, industrial plant installers, specifiers, insulation contractors and compliance officers specifying or installing in-situ expanded perlite insulation on pipes, vessels, ducts and other equipment.
- Useful where high-temperature resistance or cryogenic performance is needed (within the stated temperature range).
- Not intended for factory-made perlite boards or as a primary solution for airborne sound insulation (though it may improve acoustic performance incidentally).
Related standards
- EN 15599-1:2010 - product specification for EP before installation (harmonised/CE marking related).
- EN 823:1994 - thickness determination (pin and plate method).
- EN ISO 9229 - thermal insulation vocabulary.
EN 15599-2:2010 helps ensure consistent installation, validated thermal performance and traceable installer declarations for expanded perlite in-situ insulation across European applications.
