Adhesives for load-bearing timber structures - Test methods - Part 6: Determination of the minimum pressing time under referenced conditions

This document specifies a method of determining the minimum pressing time for two glue line thicknesses, close contact glue line and thick glue line (between 0,3 mm and 8 mm), at three temperatures. It is applicable to adhesives used in load-bearing timber products.
This document is only intended for obtaining a reliable base of comparison of pressing time between adhesives. The method gives results that cannot be applied to the safe manufacture of timber structures without modifications for the influences of timber density/absorbency, moisture content, factory temperature and relative air humidity.

Overview

SIST EN 302-6:2023 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies a precise test method for determining the minimum pressing time required for adhesives used in load-bearing timber structures. This standard covers two types of glue line thicknesses - close contact glue lines and thick glue lines (ranging from 0.3 mm to 8 mm) - across three different reference temperatures. The primary objective is to establish a reliable baseline for comparing pressing times of various adhesives under standardized conditions. However, the results are intended only for comparative purposes and must be adjusted for real-world manufacturing variables such as timber density, moisture content, factory conditions, and air humidity.

Key Topics

  • Minimum pressing time determination: Defines the shortest pressing time that achieves a tensile shear strength of at least 4 N/mm².
  • Glue line thicknesses: Focuses on close contact glue lines (≤ 0.1 mm) and thick glue lines (≥ 0.3 mm), ensuring application flexibility.
  • Temperature conditions: Tests adhesives at three controlled temperatures: 15°C, 20°C, and 30°C to simulate typical working environments.
  • Test specimen preparation: Utilizes beech wood panels conditioned at specified moisture content (12 ± 1%) and temperature to ensure consistency.
  • Tensile shear strength testing: Employs standard lap shear tests according to EN 302-1 with defined clamping pressures and adhesive spreads.
  • Standardized procedures: Specifies requirements for specimen conditioning, adhesive application, clamping pressure (0.8 N/mm² unless otherwise specified), and test sequence to maintain reproducibility.
  • Result analysis: Requires calculating mean tensile shear strength and coefficient of variation from multiple specimens to assess adhesive performance.
  • Limitations: Emphasizes that adjustments are necessary for safe timber structure manufacture due to natural wood variability and environmental influences.

Applications

SIST EN 302-6:2023 provides vital testing protocols for quality control and research focused on adhesives in load-bearing timber constructions. The standard supports:

  • Adhesive manufacturers: Enables consistent comparison of pressing times to optimize formulations and improve curing performance.
  • Timber product manufacturers: Guides selection of adhesives based on press times aligned with production schedules, improving manufacturing efficiency.
  • Structural engineers and designers: Supplies reliable data for adhesives’ pressing requirements, contributing to safer and more durable timber structural designs.
  • Quality assurance labs: Offers standardized testing methodology to validate adhesive curing times before large-scale production or construction.
  • Research institutions: Facilitates studies on the interaction between adhesive types, glue line thickness, and press times under defined temperatures, driving innovation in timber bonding.

Related Standards

SIST EN 302-6:2023 is part of an extensive series of standards addressing adhesives for load-bearing timber structures, aligning closely with EN 1995 (Eurocode 5: Design of timber structures):

  • EN 301: Classification and performance requirements for phenolic and aminoplastic adhesives.
  • EN 302 Test Methods Series:
    • Part 1: Determination of longitudinal tensile shear strength
    • Part 2: Resistance to delamination
    • Part 3: Effect of acid damage from temperature and humidity cycling
    • Part 4: Effects of wood shrinkage on shear strength
    • Part 5: Determination of maximum assembly time
    • Part 7: Determination of working life under reference conditions
    • Part 8: Static load testing of bond lines in compression shear
  • EN 15416 and Others: Methods for other adhesive types such as polyurethane and emulsion polymer isocyanates, addressing long-term performance, open assembly time, and minimum pressing time.
  • EN 17334 & EN 17418: Standards for glued-in rod testing and on-site repair adhesives within timber structures.

These related standards provide comprehensive evaluation and classification frameworks, supporting rigorous assessment of timber adhesive systems and ensuring harmonized quality and safety across the timber construction industry.
