Overview

EN 527-2:2016+A1:2019 - published by CEN - is the European standard that defines safety, strength and durability requirements for office work tables and desks used in seated, sit‑stand or standing positions. It covers design features, user safety (including shear/squeeze points), structural integrity and mechanical endurance tests. The standard excludes other office tables covered by EN 15372. Annex A gives a recommended table‑top deflection test and Annex B provides an example calculation for structural stiffness.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & normative reference: Applies to work tables and desks; test methods are normatively referenced to EN 1730:2012 (stability, strength and durability test methods).
  • Design for user safety:
    • Accessible edges and corners must be chamfered at least 1 mm × 1 mm or rounded with radius ≥ 2 mm.
    • Ends of feet and tubular components must be closed or capped.
    • Lubricated sliding parts shall be designed to avoid staining users.
  • Shear and squeeze points:
    • No closing gaps < 25 mm, unless always < 7 mm, for parts moved by powered mechanisms or created during normal use.
    • Shear/squeeze points created only during setup/folding are acceptable when foreseeable and controllable.
  • Stability and structural safety:
    • Tables must resist overturning in specified stability tests (tests 10 and 11 per EN 1730).
    • Load values for stability tests include 750 N vertical stability loads and 400 N for extension elements (as specified).
  • Strength & durability testing (test sequence per Table 1):
    • Durability of height adjustment: 5 000 cycles (electrically operated mechanisms included).
    • Horizontal durability: 10 000 cycles at specified forces.
    • Vertical durability: 10 000 cycles at 400 N.
    • Tests for castored tables: 2 000 cycles; drop test nominal height 100 mm.
    • Static load tests include horizontal and vertical static loads (examples: 450 N specified horizontal, 1 000 N vertical static).
  • Stiffness requirement:
    • Measured stiffness values D and D1 divided by tabletop height must be ≤ 17 mm/m (example calculation provided in Annex B).
  • Information and reporting:
    • User information (intended use, operating instructions, maintenance) in the national language.
    • Test reports must reference EN 527-2, list defects, test conditions and results, test facility and date.

Practical applications - who uses this standard

  • Furniture manufacturers and designers - to design and validate compliant work tables, including height‑adjustable desks.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies - to carry out durability, stability and strength testing per EN 1730 procedures and EN 527-2 requirements.
  • Specifiers, procurement teams and safety engineers - to select tables that meet European safety and performance expectations for office environments.
  • Product compliance and quality assurance teams - to prepare technical documentation and user instructions required for market access.

Related standards
