Soil improvers and growing media - Determination of organic matter content and ash
This document specifies a routine method for determining the organic matter and the ash content of soil improvers and growing media.
NOTE The loss on ignition (LOI) is often used as an estimate for the content of organic matter in the sample. Inorganic substances or decomposition products (e.g. H2O, CO2, SO2, O2) are released or absorbed and some inorganic substances are volatile under the reaction conditions. Thus, a conversion to the organic carbon content is not possible.

Overview
oSIST prEN 13039:2025:2025 is a European draft standard developed by CEN/TC 223 for the determination of organic matter content and ash in soil improvers and growing media. This routine analytical method specifies procedures for accurately measuring the organic matter and residual mineral ash following controlled ignition. It replaces the earlier EN 13039:2011 standard, enhancing technical scope and updating testing temperature parameters to improve reliability. This method is essential for quality control and compliance in the production and use of soil amendments, contributing to agricultural productivity and environmental safety.
Key Topics
- Scope: Defines the method to determine organic matter by loss on ignition (LOI) and ash content in soil improvers and growing media.
- Terminology: Includes critical definitions such as organic matter (carbon content excluding water and inorganic substances) and ash (residual mineral matter post combustion).
- Testing Principles: Sample drying at 105°C ±2°C prior to ignition at 550°C ±25°C, with ash content measured by residue weight after combustion.
- Methodology:
- Preparation of samples as per prEN 13040-1:2025
- Use of specialized apparatus such as drying oven, muffle furnace, quartz or platinum basins, and analytical balance
- Controlled heating and repeated ignition cycles to ensure complete ashing
- Weight measurements pre- and post-ignition to calculate organic matter and ash percentages
- Safety: Handling precautions for potentially dusty or sharp samples during testing.
- Calculations: Precise formulas define organic matter as loss on ignition percentage and ash as the residual mineral content by mass.
- Validation: Method validated per ISO 5725-2 through collaborative European laboratory studies ensuring repeatability and reproducibility.
Applications
- Soil Quality Assessment: Determining organic matter and ash informs on nutrient content and soil amendment effectiveness.
- Growing Media Certification: Ensures commercial soil improvers and compost products meet regulatory and market quality standards.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supports adherence to EU Fertilising Product Regulation (EU 2019/1009) by providing standardized testing protocols.
- Research and Development: Facilitates material characterization in agricultural science and environmental research.
- Quality Control: Routine monitoring during production and storage to assess stability and performance of soil improvers and growing media.

organic matter
carbon fraction of a sample which is free from water and inorganic substances
3.2
ash
residual mineral matter remaining after the destruction of organic matter/material by controlled burning
4 Principle
The test portion is dried at 105 °C ± 2 °C, then ashed at 550 °C ± 25 °C. The ash is determined as the
residue on ignition. The organic matter is taken to be the loss of mass on ignition. Both are expressed as
a percentage by mass of the dried sample.
NOTE 1 Loss on ignition (LOI) is an empirical parameter, thus in principle there is no interference connected to
the determination. However, for some purposes the determination of LO
