Overview

EN 2256:2004 - Aerospace series - Aluminium alloy AL‑P2618A - T852 - Hand and die forgings, a ≤ 150 mm - is a CEN (AECMA‑STAN) material standard that specifies composition, production and mechanical requirements for small aluminium forgings intended for aerospace applications. It covers forgings manufactured from EN 2486 forging stock, delivery conditions, dimensional limits (a ≤ 150 mm) and inspection/test rules referenced to EN 4400‑7.

Key topics and requirements

  • Material designation: Aluminium alloy AL‑P2618A with specified chemical composition ranges (Si, Fe, Cu, Mn, Mg, Ni, Zn, Ti+Zr, Ti, Al).
  • Forms covered: Hand and die (freiform and gesenkschmiedestücke) forgings with maximum dimension a ≤ 150 mm.
  • Production: Forged from forging stock to EN 2486; melting method not specified.
  • Delivery conditions: Primarily T852 temper (also T352) - both require solution heat treatment (525–535 °C) and quench; cold compression 1–5% is mandatory. T852 includes an artificial aging step (185–195 °C for 16–24 h); T352 relies on natural aging.
  • Mechanical property minima (ambient temperature): Specified by thickness range and test direction (L, LT, ST).
    • a ≤ 90 mm: Proof stress Rp0.2 ≥ 385 (L) / 375 (LT) / 375 (ST) MPa; Tensile Rm ≥ 440 / 435 / 425 MPa; Elongation A ≥ 6% / 4.5% / 3%.
    • 90 < a ≤ 120 mm: Rp0.2 ≥ 380 / 370 / 365 MPa; Rm ≥ 430 / 425 / 415 MPa; A ≥ 6% / 4.5% / 3%.
    • 120 < a ≤ 150 mm: Rp0.2 ≥ 370 / 360 / 355 MPa; Rm ≥ 420 / 415 / 405 MPa; A ≥ 6% / 4.5% / 3%.
  • Other controls: External/internal defect acceptance, macrostructure, batch uniformity and marking/dimensional inspections referenced to EN 4400‑7.
  • Typical properties: Electrical conductivity typical values ~17.5 MS/m (T352) and ~21.0 MS/m (T852). Limits on hardness variation per product and per batch are specified.
  • Qualification: Product qualification programme to be agreed between manufacturer and purchaser.

Applications and users

  • Practical use: selection and procurement of small aluminium forgings (a ≤ 150 mm) for aerospace components where documented material, heat‑treatment and mechanical performance are required.
  • Who uses it:
    • Aerospace manufacturers and forging shops
    • Design and materials engineers specifying forgings
    • Quality, inspection and procurement teams
    • Certification and contracting authorities requiring compliant material supply
