Overview

oSIST prEN 6128:2024 is an upcoming European standard developed by SIST for the aerospace sector, specifically focusing on high strength, stainless steel blind bolts with 100° flush heads. These fasteners are crucial in aerospace engineering, where safe, secure, and flush-mounted connections are required in difficult-to-access locations. The document precisely defines the configuration, dimensions, tolerances, and mass specifications for these components, contributing to industry-wide consistency, safety, and reliability.

This standard supersedes the previous EN 6128:2017 and incorporates several technical updates, reflecting advancements and feedback from industry stakeholders.

Key Topics

  • Configuration and Dimensions: Defines detailed geometry of the flush head, serrated pin, locking collar, and related fastener features to ensure compatibility and performance across aerospace applications.
  • Tolerances and Mass: Specifies dimensional ranges and mass characteristics for various diameter and grip length codes, supporting product selection and weight calculation in structural design.
  • Performance Requirements: Includes minimum static strength, tensile preload, and spindle retention values essential for structural safety in aerospace assemblies.
  • Materials and Finishes: Identifies compliant stainless steel materials (A-286 CRES, 316 CRES, Inconel), permissible surface finishes, and lubrication options, all tailored to resist corrosion and meet stringent aerospace requirements.
  • Designation and Marking: Provides standardized methods for part designation and mandatory product marking according to EN 2424, ensuring traceability and quality control.
  • Compliance and Referenced Standards: Lists normative references related to material properties, coatings, and technical specifications commonly used in aerospace fastener production.

Applications

Blind bolts with 100° flush heads specified in oSIST prEN 6128:2024 are primarily used in:

  • Aircraft Structures: Ideal for locations with limited access, such as wing skins, fuselage panels, and other assemblies where only one side is reachable.
  • Spacecraft and Satellites: Suitable for joining structural elements where high strength and minimal protrusion are vital for aerodynamics and component fit.
  • Helicopters and Defense Systems: Used in rotorcraft and military aerospace systems where vibration resistance, reliability, and adherence to strict standards are critical.

Their high strength and corrosion-resistant materials ensure durability and performance even in demanding operational environments, helping reduce maintenance needs and increasing the safety margin for aerospace assemblies.

Related Standards

oSIST prEN 6128:2024 references and aligns with several established aerospace fastener standards, including:

  • EN 2424: Marking of aerospace products
  • EN 4473: Technical specification for aluminium pigmented coatings for fasteners
  • NASM8975: General specification for high strength, blind, installation formed fasteners
  • SAE AMS2700: Passivation of corrosion-resistant steels
  • SAE AMS5687 / AMS5690 / AMS5737: Specifications for stainless and nickel alloy materials used in aerospace fasteners
  • SAE AS5272, MIL-PRF-46010, DOD-L-85645: Standards for solid film lubricants and coatings

Adhering to these interconnected standards ensures that aerospace fasteners meet international requirements for quality, performance, and safety while enabling global sourcing and manufacturing consistency.

oSIST prEN 6128:2024 serves as a critical reference for engineers, manufacturers, and quality assurance professionals involved in designing and producing aerospace assemblies requiring high-strength, reliable blind bolts with a flush finish.
