FprEN 6128 is a CEN draft European Standard for an aerospace blind bolt with a 100° flush head and high strength. It specifies the configuration, dimensions, tolerances and mass of a stainless steel blind bolt for aerospace applications, so engineers, buyers and quality teams can define, select and inspect the same fastener type.
What does FprEN 6128 specify?
FprEN 6128 sets the product definition for a stainless steel blind bolt used in aerospace applications. It focuses on the bolt’s form, size, fit, mass and accepted material and finish combinations, so the fastener can be specified consistently across design, procurement and inspection.
The document is organized into:
- Scope
- Normative references
- Terms and definitions
- Requirements
- Designation
- Marking
- Technical specification
Clause 4 is the core of the document, with tables and figures covering geometry, performance and material options.
What are the key requirements of FprEN 6128?
FprEN 6128 is built around dimensional control, installation performance and identification. The most important requirements are in Clause 4, with supporting details in Figures 1 and 2 and Tables 1 to 6.
Configuration, dimensions and tolerances
Clause 4.1 requires the configuration, dimensions, tolerances, static strength, tensile preload and spindle retention to conform to Figure 1, Figure 2, Table 1 and Table 2. In practice, this means the bolt is not just a general fastener type - its head form, serrated pin geometry, sleeve arrangement and limiting dimensions are all controlled.
Figure 1 shows the main configuration and identifies the marking location, serrated pin, locking collar, crown height, grip, sleeve, shifting anvil and drive washer. Figure 2 shows typical installation, including the blind-side head slope limits. For a purchaser or inspector, these figures define what the installed fastener should look like and how it sits in an assembly.
Strength, preload and spindle retention
Table 2 gives the minimum installed single shear strength, tensile strength, tensile preload and spindle retention values. These are the performance checks that matter when the bolt is expected to hold load after installation. For design and qualification work, this table is the reference for the fastener’s installed mechanical behavior.
Grip range and mass
Clause 4.2 links grip range and mass to Table 3 and Table 4. Table 3 sets the usable grip length ranges, including different underlap and overlap cases and special notes for certain diameter codes. Table 4 gives mass per 1 000 pieces, which helps with procurement, logistics and weight-sensitive aerospace assemblies.
Material, finish and lubrication
Clause 4.3 refers to Tables 5 and 6 for the permitted material, finish and lubrication combinations. Table 5 links the sleeve, serrated pin and locking collar to specified materials and finish options, and it also allows lubrication by named product specifications when lubrication is used. Table 6 gives sleeve finish codes. This matters because surface treatment and lubrication affect corrosion resistance, installation behavior and part identification.
Designation
Clause 5 defines the designation format. The example shows how the standard number, material code, diameter code, grip length code and sleeve finish code are combined into one part number. This helps manufacturers and buyers order the correct variant without ambiguity. Clause 5 also notes a special change for diameter code 05 when the reduced diameter shifting anvil/drive washer is used.
Marking
Clause 6 requires marking according to EN 2424 style B on the fastener head, with the EN standard number, grip length code and manufacturer’s identification. It also allows the manufacturer’s material code or part number instead of the EN standard number, and it permits single-digit marking for grip length codes below 10. That gives production and inspection teams a clear marking format to check on the part.
Technical specification
Clause 7 points to NASM8975 as the technical specification, except for the strength, preload and spindle retention requirements stated in Table 2. In practice, this means FprEN 6128 uses an external fastener specification as its base, then overrides the performance values that are specific to this bolt.
Who uses FprEN 6128?
FprEN 6128 is used by aerospace designers, fastener manufacturers, procurement teams and quality inspectors. Designers use it to define the bolt type, grip range and performance level. Buyers and suppliers use it to order and produce the correct designation, material and finish. Quality teams use it to verify dimensions, marking, installation behavior and the installed strength-related requirements.
What changed in FprEN 6128 from the previous edition?
FprEN 6128 will supersede EN 6128:2017. The stated technical changes are:
- Figure 1 and Figure 2 were updated, with dimensions Q and X removed
- Dimension Q was removed from Table 1
- Table 3 was corrected and hole limits were removed
- Table 4 values for diameter code 05 were corrected
- Tables 5 and 6 were updated to match the current normative references and preferred options
Which standards are used with FprEN 6128?
FprEN 6128 uses several external documents to define marking, coatings, materials, lubrication and passivation:
- EN 2424 - marking of aerospace products
- EN 4473 - aluminium pigmented coatings for fasteners
- DOD-L-85645 - one permitted dry film lubricant
- MIL-PRF-46010 - one permitted solid film lubricant
- NASM8975 - the base technical specification used in Clause 7
- SAE AMS2700 - passivation of corrosion resistant steels
- SAE AMS5687, SAE AMS5690 and SAE AMS5737 - material specifications used in Table 5
- SAE AS5272 and SAE AS87132 - permitted lubrication options
What does the FprEN 6128 document contain?
The document contains the engineering definition of the blind bolt through figures, tables and short clauses. Figures 1 and 2 show the configuration and a typical installation. Tables 1 to 4 cover dimensions, tolerances, performance, grip range and mass, while Tables 5 and 6 define the material, finish, lubrication and sleeve finish coding.
It also contains the part designation scheme, the marking rule and the reference technical specification used for the fastener. For anyone building, buying or checking the part, these are the sections that turn the fastener type into a specific, orderable and inspectable product.
