Overview
EN 3381:2025 is a European standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) for aerospace screws. This standard specifies the characteristics of screws with:
- 100° countersunk normal head
- Offset cruciform recess drive
- Close tolerance normal shank and short thread
- Manufactured in titanium alloy, anodized, and lubricated with molybdenum disulphide (MoS₂)
The screws are classified at a minimum tensile strength of 1 100 MPa at ambient temperature and up to a maximum temperature of 315°C. EN 3381:2025 ensures uniformity in critical aerospace fasteners, providing industry-wide confidence in performance, reliability, and safety.
Key Topics
- Screw Configuration: Defines requirements for the 100° countersunk head, offset cruciform recess, short threaded shank, and close tolerances necessary for aerospace applications.
- Materials and Surface Treatments: Specifies titanium alloy as the base material, with anodizing for enhanced corrosion resistance and MoS₂ lubrication for improved wear and reduced friction.
- Mechanical Performance: Classification at 1 100 MPa tensile strength and service temperature up to 315°C addresses demanding aerospace requirements.
- Dimensional Standards and Marking: Links screw dimensions and tolerances to ISO 5856, ISO 7913, and relevant marking as per EN 2424.
- Quality Management: Manufacturers must comply with a recognized quality management system, such as EN 9100, and meet qualification procedures for aerospace products.
- Oversized Bolts: Guidance is provided for the use of oversized bolts according to EN 4016.
Applications
EN 3381:2025 screws are vital components in the European aerospace industry, where high performance and stringent quality controls are critical. Typical applications include:
- Aircraft Structures: Fuselage panels, wings, and structural joins where close tolerance and high-strength fasteners are essential.
- Engine Components: Areas exposed to elevated temperatures requiring titanium alloy screws with MoS₂ lubrication.
- Avionics and Equipment Mounting: Situations demanding light weight, reliability, and precision in assembly.
- Maintenance and Repairs: Standardized replacement screws ensure interchangeability and safety during aircraft servicing.
Standardized properties simplify procurement, manufacturing, and maintenance processes for OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and MRO organizations across the aviation and space sectors.
Related Standards
Understanding and applying EN 3381:2025 is supported by familiarity with several other important standards, including:
- EN 2424 – Marking of aerospace products
- EN 2491 – Molybdenum disulphide dry lubricants - Coating methods
- EN 4016 – Aerospace series - Oversized bolts
