Coil coated metals - Test methods - Part 2: Gloss
This document specifies the procedure for determining the gloss of an organic coating on a metallic substrate. Gloss is a characteristic of fundamental importance to the appearance of the coil coated product.
The apparatus requires a flat specimen of size greater than the aperture, thus, uneven surfaces cannot be measured.
This method is applicable to all pigmented and unpigmented coatings including metallic/pearlescent coatings. However, for textured coatings it is only indicative.

Overview
SIST EN 13523-2:2021 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the test method for determining the gloss of organic coatings applied on metallic substrates, specifically coil coated metals. Gloss is a critical optical property that significantly affects the appearance and visual quality of coil coated products used across various industries. The standard outlines a precise procedure to measure the specular reflectance of coatings to evaluate gloss performance, thus ensuring consistent quality and compliance with industry requirements.
This standard applies to all pigmented and unpigmented coatings, including metallic and pearlescent finishes, although measurements on highly textured coatings are considered indicative only due to surface irregularities. The method requires flat specimens larger than the device aperture for accurate readings, meaning it is not applicable to uneven or rough surfaces.
Key Topics
- Gloss Measurement Principle: Gloss is measured by quantifying the specular reflectance of light at specified angles, commonly 60°, with optional 20° or 85° geometries for enhanced sensitivity to high or low gloss levels.
- Required Apparatus: A glossmeter or multi-angle glossmeter meeting the requirements of EN ISO 2813 is employed along with calibration standards for accuracy.
- Sample Preparation and Conditioning: Samples are prepared and conditioned in line with EN 13523-0:2021 to ensure standardized testing conditions.
- Measurement Procedure:
- Choose geometry based on gloss range (20° for high gloss > 70 GU, 85° for low gloss < 10 GU, otherwise 60°).
- Calibrate the instrument with high-gloss reference plates.
- Measure gloss at ambient, or controlled conditions (23 ± 2 °C temperature, 50 ± 5% relative humidity) for critical assessments.
- Take at least three readings on different locations and directions (rolling or perpendicular direction), averaging results for the final gloss value.
- Gloss Units (GU): Results are expressed in gloss units, a standardized scale for comparing surface reflectivity.
- Reporting Requirements: Test reports should include product identification, test reference, geometry used, measurement direction, obtained results, deviations if any, anomalies, and date of testing.
Applications
The SIST EN 13523-2:2021 standard is fundamental for industries and professionals involved in the production, quality control, and specification of coil coated metals. Key applications include:
- Quality Assurance: Ensuring consistent gloss finish that meets customer and regulatory specifications.
- Product Development: Optimizing coating formulations and processes to achieve desired gloss characteristics.
- Material Specification: Supporting architectural, automotive, appliance, and construction industries in selecting metal substrates with precise aesthetic properties.
- Compliance and Certification: Verifying gloss performance according to recognized international methods to facilitate market access and standardization.
- Surface Appearance Evaluation: Monitoring changes in gloss after exposure to environmental factors or durability testing as part of lifecycle assessments.
Related Standards
SIST EN 13523-2:2021 is part of the broader EN 13523 series on coil coated metals test methods, including but not limited to:
