Overview

SIST EN ISO 28762:2012 is an international standard specifying the requirements for vitreous and porcelain enamel coatings applied to steel surfaces designed for writing purposes, such as whiteboards and chalkboards. Developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 107 and endorsed by CEN, this standard ensures both functional and aesthetic qualities suitable for writing surfaces. The coated steel must meet strict criteria for durability, surface finish, and erase-ability, making it ideal for educational, professional, and commercial environments.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
SIST EN ISO 28762:2012 covers enamel coatings fused to steel substrates used for writing surfaces. It standardizes performance characteristics for whiteboards and chalkboards coated with vitreous or porcelain enamels.

  • Steel Substrate Requirements
Steel used must conform to EN 10209, ensuring it is free from defects that might affect coating appearance and performance. The thickness of steel is determined by mutual agreement based on application needs.

  • Coating Thickness
The maximum final thickness of fired enamel is 250 µm for whiteboards and 200 µm for chalkboards, measured via magnetic thickness tests per ISO 2178.

  • Functional Performance
The standard outlines tests for critical attributes:

    • Adherence: Enamel adherence to steel must achieve at least level 3 per EN 10209, resisting mechanical impacts.
    • Wear Resistance: Evaluated using ASTM C501 with Taber abrasion, limiting mass loss to 0.10g after 1,000 revolutions.
    • Impact Resistance: No damage over 2 mm diameter after impact per ISO 4532 requirements.
    • Surface Hardness: Minimum Mohs hardness of 5 for whiteboards and 3 for chalkboards measured by EN 15771.
    • Scratch Resistance: Minimum values specified according to ISO 15695.
    • Chemical Resistance: High resistance to acids and various solvents per ISO 28706-1 testing methods.
  • Aesthetic Characteristics
Color and gloss are subject to agreement between supplier and buyer, with gloss levels defined (e.g., minimum 35 units at 60° incidence for whiteboards per ISO 2813). Surface finish details, such as orange peel effect or silk-screen patterns, are customizable.

  • Write-ability and Erasability
Whiteboards support dry-erasable, water-soluble, and permanent markers, with specifications ensuring easy removal of markings without damage or discoloration. Chalkboards must accommodate chalk writing easily erased with a dry eraser.

  • Graffiti Resistance
The enamel surfaces can be cleaned of inks, paints, and varnishes using appropriate solvents without visible deterioration, ensuring longevity in high-usage environments.

Applications

  • Educational Facilities
Standard-compliant enamel-coated steel whiteboards and chalkboards provide durable, smooth writing surfaces for classrooms and lecture halls.

  • Corporate and Office Settings
Enamel-coated steel boards meeting SIST EN ISO 28762:2012 offer professional-grade writing surfaces ideal for meetings, presentations, and brainstorming.

  • Public and Commercial Spaces
Due to their robust wear, chemical resistance, and graffiti removal capability, these enamel coatings are suitable for public information displays and interactive walls.

  • Manufacturing of Writing Surfaces
Steel panel manufacturers and enamel coating suppliers use this standard to ensure their products meet international quality and performance benchmarks.

  • ISO 2178 – Magnetic method for measuring coating thickness
  • ISO 2813 – Determination of specular gloss of paint films
  • ISO 4532 – Impact resistance test for vitreous enamel articles
  • ISO 15695 – Scratch resistance testing of enamel finishes

ISO 28762:2010(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 28762 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 107, Metallic and other inorganic coatings.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 28762:2008), of which it constitutes a minor
revision.
