Concrete pavements - Part 4: Test methods for the determination of wear resistance of concrete pavements to studded tyres
This European Standard describes a test method for the determination of the wear resistance to studded tyres of specimens either cut from hardened concrete pavements or moulded in laboratory.
NOTE The test method is applicable for the finished concrete (end product testing) and not only for the aggregate as described in EN 1097-9. In the report from Swedish Road and Transport Research Institute (1996), Ring Analysis of Nordic Road Simulators: Proposal for a common test method for the determination of the wear resistance of concrete pavements, more information of the methods precision is given (see Bibliography).
Three different configurations of the test equipment are considered in this document, one using truck-wheels and the other two using car-wheels.

Overview
EN 13863-4:2012 - Concrete pavements. Part 4 - specifies a standardized test method for determining the wear resistance of concrete pavements to studded tyres. Published by CEN, this European Standard applies to finished concrete specimens (cut from pavements or moulded in the lab) and defines equipment configurations, specimen preparation, measurement, test sequences and reporting so that wear caused by studded tyres can be quantified and compared.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test scope: Wear resistance to studded tyres for concrete pavement specimens (end-product testing).
- Specimens: Minimum two specimens; dimensions depend on the test machine configuration (three methods: Method 1 - truck-wheels, Methods 2 & 3 - car-wheels).
- Reference segments: Two reference segments are required in every test; detailed material composition and properties are specified (binder proportions, aggregate grading, w/c+silica ratio 0.40, cement type CEM I–52,5 LA, compressive strength ~85 ±2 MPa).
- Test equipment & parameters: Machine diameters, wheel loads, contact pressures, speeds, stud counts/weights, and temperature ranges are defined for each method. Measuring accuracy for rut depth: ±0.1 mm.
- Test sequences: Defined cycles of dry/wet revolutions per method (total revolutions: Method 1 - 70 000; Method 2 - 210 000; Method 3 - 750 000). Wear profiles must be measured at least at eight points across the track.
- Results & calculations: Primary output is the Relative Wear Index (RWI) (ratio of wear on test specimen to wear on reference segment, expressed as a whole number). For Methods 1 and 2 an adjusted metric SPSv = (0.8 St + 0.2 Sv) × Kw is calculated, with Kw derived from reference segment dry/wet wear. Initial wear is measured and reported separately.
- Reporting: Test reports must reference the standard, list laboratory and specimen details, provide RWI and SPSv (where applicable), initial wear, and a wear-versus-revolutions diagram.
Applications and who uses it
- Road authorities and pavement engineers assessing long-term surface durability against studded tyre abrasion.
- Materials and testing laboratories performing acceptance testing or quality control on concrete mixes and finished pavement surfaces.
- Concrete producers and contractors validating mix designs and surface finishes for regions with studded-tyre traffic.
- Researchers comparing wear performance across mixes, aggregates and surface treatments.
