Diese Norm legt die Anforderung für ein experimentelles Verfahren fest, mit dem über eine Typprüfung nachgewiesen werden kann, daß die Auslegung der drucktragenden Gehäuse und deren Endöffnungen, hergestellt aus Gußeisen, Stahl oder Kupferlegierung, die erforderliche Druckfestigkeit mit einer angemessenen Sicherheitsspanne besitzt. Diese Norm ist nicht anwendbar auf Armaturen, die auf der Basis von zeitabhängigen Festigkeitskennwerten ausgelegt sind, z.B. für Anwendung bei Druckstößen und/oder bei Temperaturen im Kriechbereich.

EN 12516-3:2002 - Valves: Shell design strength - Part 3: Experimental method (CEN) specifies a repeatable, hydrostatic type-test to verify that valve shells and body ends (cast iron, steel, copper alloys) have the required pressure-containing capability with an adequate safety margin. It is intended as an alternative or supplement to the tabulation (Part 1) and calculation (Part 2) methods. The standard excludes valves designed on time-dependent strength (creep) or for pulsating-pressure/fatigue applications.

- Test fluid & temperature: Water between 5 °C and 40 °C.
- Duration: Minimum test duration is 10 minutes (per pressure step).
- Test setup: Body ends closed with suitable seals (flanges, welded caps, plugs); test rig must not externally reinforce or load the shell in ways that affect results.
- Acceptance criteria: No visible leakage through metallic parts. Gasket leakage is acceptable if it does not obscure assessment.
- Documentation: Full recording of test parameters, measurements and outcomes is required.
