Izboljševalci tal in rastni substrati - Določevanje organske snovi in pepela

Overview
EN 13039:2011 (CEN) specifies a routine laboratory method for the determination of organic matter and ash content in soil improvers and growing media. The method uses drying and controlled ignition (loss on ignition) to quantify organic and residual mineral fractions of a dried test sample. Note: the standard does not apply to liming materials or preformed materials such as mineral wool or foam slabs.
This European Standard is intended to support consistent product characterization, quality control and harmonised reporting across laboratories in CEN member countries. It also highlights that national legal declaration requirements may differ from the Standard's requirements.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability: Routine determination for soil improvers and growing media; excludes liming and certain preformed substrates.
- Principle: Dry the test portion (oven drying) and determine ash by controlled combustion. Organic matter is taken as the loss in mass on ignition at 450 ± 25 °C; ash is the residual mineral matter.
- Apparatus and sample size: Typical apparatus includes a drying oven (103 ± 2 °C), electric muffle furnace (450 ± 25 °C and 550 ± 25 °C), fused silica basins (~5 g sample capacity), desiccator and analytical balance (0.001 g readability).
- Procedure highlights:
- Prepare the test sample in accordance with EN 13040:2007.
- Preheat basins in a muffle furnace at 550 ± 25 °C to remove volatiles, then cool in a desiccator and weigh (m0).
- Spread approximately 5 g of sample in the basin and dry at 103 ± 2 °C, repeating heating and weighing until mass change < 0.01 g (m1).
- Ignite in a muffle furnace raised to 450 ± 25 °C, maintain (typically 6 h plus additional heating) and repeat weighing until mass change < 0.01 g (m2).
- Calculate organic matter and ash as percentage of the dried sample using the specified formulas.
- Precision: The standard refers to precision results from an interlaboratory trial (see Annex A) and ISO 5725 for accuracy and precision assessment.
Applications
- Routine quality control for manufacturers of soil improvers and growing media.
- Laboratory testing to support product specification, batch release and comparative studies.
- Regulatory and conformity assessment where standardized test methods are required for reporting organic content and ash.
Related Standards
- EN 12579:1999 - Sampling of soil improvers and growing media.
- EN 13040:2007 - Sample preparation, dry matter and moisture determination.
- ISO 5725 (all parts) - Accuracy (trueness and precision) of measurement methods and results.
For test reporting, EN 13039:2011 requires full sample identification, reference to the Standard, results per Clause 7, and notation of any deviations or unusual observations.
