Overview
prEN 1024 - Clay roofing tiles for discontinuous laying - Determination of geometric characteristics (CEN draft) specifies standardized methods to measure and report the geometric characteristics of clay roofing tiles defined in EN 1304. The document is intended for clay roofing tiles laid discontinuously (individual tiles rather than sheets) and provides repeatable procedures, apparatus tolerances and reporting rules to support quality control, conformity assessment and product specification.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and test pieces: Geometric tests are carried out on sets of whole tiles (typically 10 test pieces for most measurements; 24 tiles required for cover/overlap dimension tests).
- Dimensional measurements: Individual tile length and width are measured along the centreline (precision of measuring apparatus ≥ 1 mm). Results are expressed as arithmetic means and percentage differences relative to manufacturer-declared dimensions (A, B).
- Cover / overlap (margins): Procedures for determining mean, maximum and minimum cover lengths and widths (interlocking tiles, tiles with lugs). Measurements use rows of interlocked tiles and formulas given to compute mean and extreme cover dimensions.
- Cambers (tile curvature): Longitudinal and transverse camber measurement procedures using a three-point rule with a dial gauge (precision ≥ 0.5 mm). Measurement bases L and B are typically 2/3 of total tile length/width. Camber is reported as percentage R = (Δh × 100) / L.
- Shape regularity – twist: Method to assess tile twist using two battens, a flat metal plate and a stepped thickness gauge to measure vertical displacement at defined support points.
- Apparatus and precision: Minimum instrument precisions are specified (1 mm for general dimensions; 0.5 mm for camber). Measurement bases, contact points and measurement positions are defined for different tile types (plain, sidelock/headlock, under-and-over).
- Reporting: Test reports include individual measurements, arithmetic means, percentages relative to declared values and relevant formulas as specified.

4 Test pieces
The measurement of geometric characteristics are carried out on 10 test pieces, each of which
constitutes a whole tile, except for the measurement of cover dimensions, which requires 24 tiles.
5 Tests methods
5.1 Determination of dimensional characteristics
5.1.1 Individual dimensions
5.1.1.1 Apparatus
The tests are made with a measuring apparatus with a precision of at least one millimetre.
5.1.1.2 Procedure
After removing any surplus clay from the edges, the measurements shall be taken, both transversely
and longitudinally along the centre of the tile unless another measuring position has been specified by
the manufacturer (see Figure 1). The dimensions are expressed to the nearest whole millimetre.

5.1.1.3 Expression of results
The arithmetic means of the lengths and widths of the 10 tested tiles and the differences expressed as a
percentage of these mean values in relation to the values A and B declared by the manufacturer shall be
calculated and noted in the test report.
5.1.2 Overlap dimensions (margins)
5.1.2.1 Principle
The mean overlap dimensions are determined longitudinally and/or transversely.
They are measured as indicated in Figure 2.

5.1.2.3 Apparatus
The tests are carried out with a measuring apparatus with a precision of at least 1 mm.
5.1.2.4 Procedure
5.1.2.4.1 Interlocking tiles
The tiles are laid upside down in two rows on a flat surface, and interlocked with one another so as to
form a stable unit. Certain types of tiles may require laying the right way up.
The tiles are interlocked longitudinally and pulled apart individually to measure the maximum distance
between two corresponding points on the first and the eleventh tile, i.e. L , the maximum length.
Following this, the tiles are taken up, then relaid and interlocked. They are pushed together individually
as closely as possible without lifting the upper tile to carry out the measurement of the minimum
distance (L ) following the procedure described above.
Take again the same measurements, but this time, transversely in order to obtain the values l and l .
