Overview

EN 13410:2001 (CEN) - "Gas-fired overhead radiant heaters - Ventilation requirements for non-domestic premises" - specifies ventilation requirements for non-domestic spaces where gas-fired overhead radiant heaters (type A appliances) are installed. The standard applies to heaters covered by EN 416-1:1999 and EN 419-1:1999 and supports harmonised safety and installation practice across CEN member states.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and appliance type: Applies to type A appliances (not intended to be flued or to evacuate combustion products directly outside). Individual heaters covered by referenced safety standards have a typical maximum rating up to 120 kW.
  • Installation room volume: Minimum room volume of 10 m³ per kW of installed nominal heat input.
  • Ventilation methods: Allows three ventilation strategies:
    • Thermal evacuation (natural stack effect via roof/wall exhaust openings)
    • Mechanical evacuation (fans extracting exhaust above heaters)
    • Natural air change (no special exhaust if building meets natural ventilation criteria)
  • Exhaust air rate: For thermal or mechanical evacuation, the required exhaust is 10 m³/h per kW of operating heat input (total exhaust flow Vtot = QNB × L, with L = 10 m³/h·kW⁻¹).
  • Location and distances:
    • Exhaust openings or fans should be installed above heaters, preferably near the ridge.
    • Horizontal distance from heater to wall-mounted exhaust/fan ≤ 6 × fan/opening mounting height; for roof-mounted devices ≤ 3 × mounting height.
  • Fans and controls: Fans must have suitable performance characteristics; heaters must only operate when exhaust evacuation is assured.
  • Air supply: Air supply openings should be located below the heaters; total supply free cross-section must be at least equal to the total exhaust free cross-section. Supply openings that can be closed must interlock with heater operation.
  • Natural ventilation exceptions: No special exhaust needed where natural air change > 1.5 volumes/hour or heat input density ≤ 5 W/m³.
  • Calculation guidance: Clause 4.2.2.7 and Annex A provide procedures to compute exhaust flows, evacuation velocities (depend on vertical distance and temperature difference) and sizing of openings/fans.

Applications and users

EN 13410 is used by:

  • HVAC and ventilation designers specifying safe exhaust and supply systems for workshops, warehouses, sports halls and industrial premises using gas-fired overhead radiant heaters.
  • Installers and system integrators ensuring interlocks, fan capacities and opening locations comply with ventilation requirements.
  • Facility managers, safety engineers and building compliance officers verifying safe operation and regulatory conformity.
  • Regulators and certifiers referencing harmonised CEN requirements in national implementation.
