(Main)Reinforced thermoplastic moulding compounds - Specification for GMT - Part 1: Designation
Reinforced thermoplastic moulding compounds - Specification for GMT - Part 1: Designation
1.1 This part of prEN 13677 establishes a data block system for the designation of glass mat reinforced thermoplastic composite sheet (GMT).
1.2 The types of thermoplastic composite sheets are differentiated from each other by a classification system based on information about basic polymer parameters, fillers/reinforcement content and type, intended method of processing and/or manufacturing, specific characteristics and designatory properties.
1.3 This European Standard is applicable to glass fibre mat reinforced polypropylene sheet materials only.
It applies to materials ready for commercial use in the form of flat sheet or coil.
This European Standard does not apply to :
¾ thermoplastic sheet moulding materials where the polymer is other than polypropylene or polypropylene alloy or a blend ;
¾ the reinforcement is other than glass fibre.
1.4 It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation give necessarily the same performance. This part of prEN 13677 does not provide engineering data, performance data or data on processing conditions which may be required to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing.
If such additional properties are required, when ever possible, they shall be determined in accordance with the test methods specified in Part 2 of this European Standard.
1.5 Whenever technical properties required in the Part 3 of this standard need to be indicated, this data block system is also the basis for it.
1.6 To ensure that the meanings of codes remain unambiguous and to avoid conflicts within the system, codes and abbreviations have been co-ordinated within the relevant ISO technical sub-committees.
GMT Produkte, deren Polymer aus einem anderen Polymer als Polypropylen oder einem Poly-propylengemisch oder einer Mischung besteht;

Overview
EN 13677-1:2003 (CEN) defines a standardized designation system for glass mat reinforced thermoplastic (GMT) composite sheet - specifically glass fibre mat reinforced polypropylene (PP) in commercial flat sheet or coil form. Part 1 establishes a structured, ISO‑aligned data‑block coding format to identify material families and individual GMT products for identification and specification purposes.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and limitations
- Applies only to PP-based GMT with glass fibre mat reinforcement, ready for commercial use as flat sheet or coil.
- Does not cover non‑PP polymers or reinforcements other than glass fibre.
- The designation system is for identification; it does not guarantee identical performance between differently sourced materials with the same code.
- Data‑block designation format
- The individual item block is split into five data blocks separated by commas:
- Basic polymer (EN ISO 1043‑1 symbol; e.g., PP with variants H, B, R, Q)
- Reinforcement/filler (type, form and nominal mass content coded per EN ISO 1043‑2)
- Manufacturing/processing method (codes for melt‑impregnated, wet process, compression moulding, pultrusion, etc.)
- Characteristic/designatory properties (specific property codes plus up to two numeric property ranges such as tensile modulus and multi‑axial impact)
- Additional information (reference to bilateral agreements or other requirements)
- Missing blocks are indicated by “X” where required. Codes are coordinated with relevant ISO sub‑committees to avoid ambiguity.
- The individual item block is split into five data blocks separated by commas:
- Designatory properties
- Mechanical and impact properties used for designation are determined from moulded test plaques (test methods and specimen preparation are defined in EN 13677‑2).
- Tensile modulus and multi‑axial impact are encoded as three‑digit range codes (see Part 1 tables).
Applications and users
- Intended for:
- Material producers and compounders to label and catalogue GMT products consistently.
- OEMs and specifiers (automotive, transport, construction, consumer goods) needing a clear material identity when sourcing GMT sheet.
- Purchasing, QA and regulatory teams to reference material identity in contracts, drawings and specifications.
- Practical uses:
- Quick identification of polymer type, reinforcement content/form, manufacturing route and key designatory properties.
- Basis for further technical specification - when performance or processing data are required, refer to EN 13677‑2 (test methods) and EN 13677‑3 (specific requirements).
Related standards
- EN 13677 Parts 2 and 3 (test methods, general and specific requirements)
- EN ISO 1043‑1, EN ISO 1043‑2 (polymer and filler/reinforcement symbols)
- EN ISO 527‑4 (tensile testing of fibre‑reinforced composites)
- EN ISO 6603‑2 (instrumented puncture/multi‑axial impact)
