Overview

EN 3388:2009 is a CEN aerospace technical specification for externally threaded fasteners made from heat‑resisting nickel‑base alloy NI‑PH2601 (Inconel 718). It defines the technical and quality assurance requirements for parts of tensile strength class 1 275 MPa at room temperature, with a maximum test temperature of 650 °C. The standard applies primarily to aerospace bolts, screws and studs when referenced on product standards or drawings. Manufacturing method is optional: parts may be machined from bar or forged (no grain‑flow control required if forged).

Key Topics

  • Material and strength class: NI‑PH2601 (Inconel 718), Rm class 1 275 MPa, max test temperature 650 °C.
  • Manufacturing routes: machining from specified bar grades or forging from approved bar; forging temperature limit ≤ 1 150 °C for hot forging.
  • Heat treatment:
    • Solution treatment: 930–1 010 °C, hold ≥ 1 h, air cool or faster.
    • Precipitation ageing: 720 ± 5 °C for 8 h, furnace cool ~55 °C/h to 620 °C, hold 8 h, then air cool (alternatives allowed to achieve ~18 h total precipitation time).
  • Threading and cold work: Threads shall be formed by a single thread rolling operation after required heat treatment; optional cold‑rolling of head-to‑shank fillet to remove machining marks.
  • Mechanical requirements:
    • Tensile testing per ISO 7961 (exceptions for very short parts where test bars are used).
    • Hardness: Rockwell C36–C45 (threaded/fillet areas may be higher due to cold working).
  • Surface quality and limits:
    • Surface oxide/contamination removal and abrasive blasting allowances.
    • Maximum oxide penetration on unmachined head surfaces 0.025 mm.
    • Discontinuity definitions and rejection criteria (cracks, seams, laps, inclusions).
  • Quality assurance and inspection:
    • Sampling and inspection schemes per ISO 2859‑1.
    • Non‑destructive testing (penetrant) per ISO 3452.
    • Manufacturer responsibility for inspection and test reports; quality system certification per ISO 9000 / EN 9100.

Applications

  • Use this standard when specifying aerospace externally threaded fasteners requiring high strength and elevated‑temperature resistance (Inconel 718/NI‑PH2601).
  • Typical users:
    • Aerospace designers and engineers specifying fasteners on product standards or drawings.
    • Manufacturers of high‑temperature fasteners selecting process controls, heat treatments and inspection regimes.
    • Quality and procurement teams verifying supplier compliance and test documentation.
  • Relevant where components operate at elevated temperatures up to 650 °C and require certified mechanical and metallurgical performance.

Related Standards

  • EN 2952, EN 2961, EN 3219 - material bar specifications for NI‑PH2601 and related nickel alloys.
  • ISO 7961 - bolt test methods.
  • ISO 2859‑1 - sampling procedures (AQL).
  • ISO 3452 - penetrant inspection.
  • ISO 6508‑1 - Rockwell hardness test.
