Overview

EN 14768:2005 (CEN) specifies construction, dimensional classification and marking requirements for fibreboard drums with removable (open) heads and slip-on lids, covering nominal capacities from 5 l to 600 l. The standard defines preferred diameter and capacity ranges for circular and rectangular cross-sections, basic terminology (sidewall, chimb, liner, barrier, etc.), and rules for designation and material identification.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and definitions: Clear terms for fibreboard drum components (sidewall, lid, base, chimb, internal/external lining, barrier, liner).
  • Dimensions and capacities: Preferred nominal capacities (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 200, 220, 250, 600 l for circular; selected sizes for rectangular). Internal and external diameters/heights, stacking and overall heights are specified; Annex A contains dimension diagrams and Annex B shows preferred size–capacity relationships.
  • Materials and construction: Sidewalls made from convolutely or spirally wound plies of virgin or recycled paper/fibreboard; bases and lids may be single or composite materials. Internal/external treatments, linings and barriers are allowed when compatible with contents.
  • Tolerances and conditioning: Dimensional tolerances after conditioning (24 h at 23 °C ±2 °C and 50 % RH ±2 %, per EN ISO 2233:2000). Manufacturing tolerances: diameters ±2.0 mm, heights ±5.0 mm; mass tolerance ±5 %.
  • Identification and designation: Material identification codes required on the lowest external sidewall; standard provides designation format and examples (e.g., "Fibreboard drum OHC EN 14768 NC - 100 l. d - 450 mm."). Annex D lists material identification symbols.
  • Fitness for use: Informative guidance (Annex C) on suitability and compatibility with contents and intended transport.

Applications and users

EN 14768 is practical for:

  • Packaging engineers and product designers specifying fibreboard drums for bulk or packaged goods.
  • Drum manufacturers seeking compliant designs, dimensions and marking rules.
  • Procurement and quality teams verifying supplier compliance, dimensional tolerances and material codes.
  • Logistics and transport planners specifying stackability, shipping cube and conditioning for transport.
  • Users involved in packaging hazardous materials (note: additional regulatory requirements such as ADR, RID, ICAO TI and IMDG may apply for dangerous goods).

Typical applications include industrial bulk packaging, non-metallic intermediate bulk containers for powders, pellets and dry goods, and inner-lined drums for moisture or gas-sensitive products.

Related standards

the important characteristics of fibreboard drums is that they can be produced in various ranges of
diameters and heights with constructions to suit specific products and market needs and can be fitted
with a variety of bases and lids.
1 Scope
This document specifies the construction requirements for cylindrical fibreboard drums with slip on lids
