Overview
EN 12710:2006 (CEN) defines construction and dimensional requirements for fibreboard drums - specifically removable-head (open-head) drums with closing rings - with a nominal capacity range of 15 l to 250 l. The standard standardizes preferred diameters and capacities, material options, marking and tolerance rules to ensure consistent manufacture, interchangeability and fitness for purpose.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and classification
- Applies to cylindrical fibreboard drums (open head) with closing rings and NC 15–250 l.
- Preferred nominal capacities: 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 200, 220, 250 l (Annex B).
- Dimensions & capacity
- Defined internal diameter (d1), outside diameter (d2), internal height (h1), external height (h2), overall height (h3) and chimb depth (h4). See Annex A for diagrams.
- Capacity (NC) is the internal volume to the top internal bead (d1 × h1).
- Shipping cube is calculated from d2 and h3.
- Material and construction
- Sidewalls: convolute or spiral-wound plies of virgin or recycled paper/fibreboard; internal/external linings, barriers or coatings optional as specified.
- Base and lid: any suitable single or composite material; chimbs secured by pressing/rolling.
- Closing ring: metal, plastics or other suitable material.
- Barrier layers and internal liners/coatings for gas/vapour resistance or chemical compatibility.
- Tolerances & conditioning
- Manufacturing tolerances: diameters ±2.0 mm, heights ±5.0 mm; mass tolerance ±5%.
- Dimensions quoted for drums conditioned 24 h at 23 °C ±2 °C and 50 % ±2 % r.h. (per EN ISO 2233).
- Marking & designation
- Material identification symbols required on external sidewall or bottom chimb (minimum symbol height 12 mm). Plastics components (except gaskets) must be marked.
- Example designation format: “Fibreboard drum OH EN 12710 NC-100 l d1-450 mm”.
Applications and users
- Who uses EN 12710:
- Drum manufacturers and converters, packaging engineers, procurement and quality teams, logistics and hazardous‑goods shippers, regulators.
- Practical uses:
- Specifying and ordering standardised open‑head fibreboard drums.
- Designing packaging for compatibility with contents (linings, barriers) and transport conditions.
- Ensuring interchangeability, correct stacking (stacking height formulas) and accurate shipping-cube calculations.
- Compliance support when drums are used for transport of dangerous goods (see notes referencing ADR, RID, IMDG, ICAO).
Related standards
- EN ISO 2233:2001 - conditioning for testing (referenced for drum conditioning).
- Transport regulations: ADR, RID, IMDG Code, ICAO Technical Instructions (relevant when drums carry dangerous goods).
