Overview
EN 1218-4:2004/prA2 is a CEN draft amendment for the safety of woodworking machines, specifically tenoning - Part 4: edge banding machines fed by chain(s). Prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 142, this draft amendment (prA2, Nov 2008) updates EN 1218-4:2004 and supports essential requirements of the EU Machinery Directive. The scope covers machines where loading and unloading is manual and the maximum work-piece height capacity is 75 mm. Machines may be single-end or double-end and process solid wood, chipboard, fibreboard, plywood or these materials with plastic laminates or edgings.
Key Topics
This amendment focuses on practical safety measures and normative updates relevant to manufacturers, integrators and safety managers:
- List of significant hazards - Updated to align with EN ISO 12100 and EN 1050 approaches; a comprehensive table maps hazards to clause requirements.
- Control systems - Clarifications and references updated (e.g. EN 60204-1:2006, EN ISO 13849-1:2008) for safety and reliability of electrical and control circuits.
- Start/stop and emergency stop - Revisions to starting, normal stopping, unusual stop controls and emergency stop requirements, including adoption of EN ISO 13850:2008.
- Ergonomics and human factors - Technical changes emphasize ergonomic design, manual handling, control layout and display requirements (references added such as EN 614-1 and EN 894 series).
- Hazard categories covered - Mechanical (cutting, shearing, entanglement, crushing), electrical, thermal, noise, dust/materials, fire, stability and combination failures (unexpected starts, power or control failures).
- Documentation and verification - Updates to marking and instruction handbook clauses; verification notes reference information from component suppliers where appropriate.
Applications
This document is primarily used by:
- Machine designers and manufacturers who need to apply harmonised safety requirements to edge banding machines with chain feed.
- Safety assessors and CE‑marking teams validating conformity with the Machinery Directive.
- Plant engineers and maintenance teams implementing safe operating, control and maintenance procedures.
Practical benefits include:
- A clear mapping of significant hazards to required safety measures.
- Updated references to current normative standards for electrical, control and ergonomic design.
- Guidance that helps reduce incidents from unexpected starts, control failures and ergonomic risks.
Related Standards
The amendment replaces or updates several normative references and adds relevant standards for ergonomic and EMC requirements. Notable referenced standards include:
- EN ISO 13850:2008 (Emergency stop)
- EN ISO 13849-1:2008 (Safety-related parts of control systems)
- EN 60204-1:2006 (Electrical equipment of machines)
- EN 847-1:2005 (Tools for woodworking)
- EN 614-1 and EN 894 series (Ergonomic design and controls)
For implementers, cross-referencing these standards with EN 1218-4:2004/prA2 ensures a coherent safety approach across mechanical, electrical and ergonomic domains.
